      Maybe they should call it a "hey" maker because when someone lands one people watching say "Hey"

            It's because, when a farmer tosses the hay with a pitchfork, he uses a wide, swinging motion. Hence, the word, haymaker!

                i believe this was a question that someone asked harold lederman once. he gave a wierd answer but it seemed reasonable, wish i could remember waht it was

                  Thought it was the swing motion of the reaper (device) they used to cut the hay. Had to swing it to make the hay.
