  • Comments Thread For: Floyd Mayweather: Top Rank Protected Cotto From Me

Floyd Mayweather Jr. lashed out at the suggestion that he ducked a fight with Miguel Cotto in 2005, when both of them were rising junior welterweights under Top Rank's promotional banner. According to Mayweather, he requested a fight with Cotto in 2005, and then Top Rank responded by matched him with a "test opponent" to get a better idea on how a Cotto fight would potentially play out in the ring. The opponent, Henry Bruseles, was dominated and stopped in eight rounds.

Bruceles being a wram up fight for cotto is bascally a known fact amongst real hardcore boxing fans in the meantime cotto was getting wobbled around the ring by c level opponents and arum quickly became very cautious of *****g his rising star in the ring with pbf. Kostya tsyzu is another fighter pbf was calling out and gunning for but the loss to hatton blew that one up in smoke.

Real boxing fans remember all this despite the revisionist history

I remember Cotto was sparring partner for Bruseles for that fight. I think he was ringside as well.

if you guys remember your boxing history you'll recall a month after the bruceles fight cotto getting hurt badly against corley. THIS SCARED ARUM and the mayweather-cotto fight was put on hold... then a few months after that Cotto was again on ***** street vs c-level Ricardo Torres.

Arum wasn't going to put his next "Star" against PBF at that point.

Real boxing history facts. Not *******/hater nonsense.

Arum has coddled and protected the hell out of Juanma so it's no surprise to hear that he didn't want Floyd anywhere neat Cotto back in 2005.

Everything Floyd just said is 100% on the money. Cotto and Hatton sitting ringside for the Gatti fight were like John Saxon (who played Roper) & Jim Kelly (who played Williams) from that scene in Enter the Dragon after Bruce's character Fu**s up O'Hara----> looking at each other thinking wft just happened, and wtf did we just see . Bruseles was Cotto's sparring partner and he mentioned how well prepared, strong etc Bruseles was and how good sparring was. Must have been a shock for Cotto to see Bruseles get toyed with. Cotto's chin was very shaky in the 140 division also.....it got alot better when he moved up.

As much as I like Pacquiao... I hate Arum even more, but the man knows how to protect his investment.

Not a huge surprise, it's what Top Rank has been doing for a while now. Inhouse catchweight fights, basically mismatches of it's own, to increase popularity of their so called PPV attractions.
