During a private sitdown meeting with select members
of the media, undefeated pound-for-pound champion
Floyd Mayweather discussed a number of topics, from
his upcoming clash this Saturday with Victor Ortiz to a
potential showdown with Manny Pacquiao. One
surprising name that came up, however, was that of
fast-rising Golden Boy Promotions fighter Saul "Canelo"
Alvarez, who's clash this Saturday with Alfonso Gomez
is being televised on the undercard of Mayweather vs.
Ortiz. "He's a pretty cool fighter...I mean, he's big, so
his country knows who Canelo is. He's huge over there,
you know? Huge," Mayweather would comment about
the undefeated WBC jr. middleweight champion.
"They'll be talking about him trying to knock me off the
block next." At that moment, almost on cue, Golden
Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer chimed in to
notify Mayweather that Alvarez was indeed hoping for a future showdown.
"They actually did tell me yesterday after Universal City that they want to fight you next
year," Schaefer would comment with a dollar sign gleam in his eyes. Mayweather just
smiled, however, and replied, "Everything takes time. Tell them to pump they breaks.
You know I take long breaks, so he may get me when I'm 38," laughing off the
suggestion...at least for now. Should a bout with Manny Pacquiao not come to fruition in
the near future, it looks like Golden Boy Promotions has plenty of other options for
Mayweather as Alvarez's name has now officially been thrown in the hat, along with that
of Amir Khan.
