    It is Klitschko's world

The Heavyweight division is the Klitschko’s brothers personal fiefdom and everyone must pay tribute by taking a licking. Since 2004, no one has even come close to beating the Klitschko’s brothers and this past Saturday fight between Vitali Klitschko and Tomasz Adamek was no exception. Adamek, the former Cruiserweight and light heavyweight champion, proved game but no match for he was too small and did not possess enough of powerful punch to make a difference. The other problem for Adamek, was that at the age of 40, Vitali Klitschko still possesses sharp reflex to parry of any attacks. Klitschko is one of those tall fighters who fights like a tall fighter; using his jab effectively to control real estate. Throughout the bout, Adamek had problems with getting inside Klitschko’s jab and Klitschko averaged 40 plus jabs per round with those jabs successful blunting any attack that Adamek attempted. Unlike David Haye, who spent most of his bout against Wladimir avoiding combat, Adamek attempted to fight.

One example of Adamek spirit and technical skills came in the fifth round in which a more aggressive approach allowed him to connect with a combination that even shook Vitali for a brief moment but those combinations were few and far between. From the middle of the second round through the sixth, occasional rallies by Adamek gave the Polish faithful that a miracle would yet happen for their favorite son; but those moments were mere illusion in which a brave fighter managed to come up with the occasional connect but paying the price. Adamek face at the end of the fight showed the results as all but three punches that Vitali connected hit Adamek’s face. At the end of the second round, a Vitali right connected and sent Adamek reeling back in the rope, with the rope keeping Adamek from hitting the canvas. The referee did not count the punch as a knockdown even thought he could. The next time, Vitali sent Adamek reeling into the rope with another right but this time, the referee counted this as a knockdown, rightly concluding correctly that the rope held Adamek up.

The last hope for Adamek’s fans was at the end of the eighth round when a Vitali slipped while throwing a right. It looked for a brief moment that a knee may have given out but Vitali returned to form in the ninth.

Vitali connected on a variety of punches from jabs, straight rights, even a hook or two in the tenth and none of those punches were missing. Halfway through the round, Adamek’s courage kept him up as he was getting nailed and his face swelled as a result but the referee decided enough was enough. Adamek was game but not good enough to beat Klitschko.

George Foreman says Vitali is better than he was:

Big George Foreman (76-5, 68 KO’s) gave WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (43-2, 40 KO’s) a big compliment after his win over Tomasz Adamek (44-2, 28 KO’s) last weekend, saying on his twitter “The champ Klitschko is as good as any other of the past champs. Better than me.”

Now that is a big compliment to be sure, because Foreman was well respected during his prime in the early 70s. However, after beating then WBA/WBC heavyweight champion Joe Frazier by a 2nd round knockout in January 1973, Foreman was only able to successfully defend the title twice, beating Jose Roman and Ken Norton before losing the belts to a 32-year-old Muhammad Ali in October 1974.

Foreman didn’t win another title until he was 45-years-old when he knocked out IBF/WBA heavyweight champion Michael Moorer by a 10th round TKO in November 1994. Foreman defended his IBF title once, beating Axel Schulz and that was it. Foreman’s knockout percentage during his career was 83.95. Vitali’s KO percentage is 88.89.

Vitali first captured a world title in 1999, winning the WBO heavyweight title with a win over Herbie Hide. Vitali defended the title two times before losing it to Chris Byrd in April 2000 when Vitali tore up his left shoulder early in the fight and was beaten by a 9th round retirement. In 2004, Vitali defeated knockout artist Corrie Sanders by an 8th round TKO to capture the WBC heavyweight title.

Vitali defended the belt only once, beating Danny Williams. Because of a number of injuries that Vitali suffered while training for a title defense against Hasim Rahman, Vitali decided to retire from boxing for four years until coming back in 2008 to stop WBC heavywight champion Samuel Peter in the 8th. Vitali has now defended the title seven times and looks to be unstoppable at this point. Tomasz Adamek, Vitali’s last challenger, was no match for Vitali and was battered until the fight was stopped in the 10th.

Excellent articles, much better than the negative one by Michael Rosenthal on The Ring website and the awful garbage by Richard Fletcher on ESPN.

Chris Byrd destroyed vitali klitschkos rotator cuff in his dominant destruction win over vitali klitschko. chris byrd scared vitali klitschko into his semi retirement. only when chris byrd had retired did vitali had the balls to come out of retirement again.

                Great article really.

                  . Joe Louis.
To be honest with you, number two is way off. Joe Louis is in a class by himself.

                  2. Rocky Marciano.
Just look at Rocky Marciano's record. Nobody beat him. You can't take that from him.

                  3. Jack Johnson.
A big brave cat, because he'd do whatever he wanted and get out of the way.

                  4. Muhammad Ali.
Put him down as the GREATEST MAN to ever box, and a hero bigger than boxing. Once Ali lost his speed, it only showed that he'd never developed a great defense.

                  5. Joe Frazier.
Only because he depended solely on his left hook do I rate Joe Frazier below Marciano. Marciano could hit with both hands.

                  6. Jack Dempsy.
Jack Dempsy's very name means strength and courage. Other than Joe Louis, there is not a name in boxing or in sports with more meaning.

                  7. Mike Tyson.
A phenomenon. What Mike Tyson was able to do with his speed of hand and punching power is as phenomenal as what Muhammad Ali did when he was Cassius Clay with speed of feet. Tyson deserves to be in the top ten; this is where I put him, the youngest man to become Heavyweight Champion of the World.

                  8. Sonny Liston.
If Sonny Liston truly had not lost his cool, had not underestimated a young Cassius Clay; and kept the same mind set that he had as a contender, history would have been a lot kinder to him. Sonny Liston could not believe Muhammad Ali was so fast and had so much courage. It just made him fall apart.

                  9. Floyd Patterson.
The First Two-Time Heavyweight Champion of the World.

                  10. Evander Holyfield.
For standing up to Mike Tyson.

As you see, I didn't make the list...

The first time around, George Foreman was too mean and too crude.

The second time around, too sophisticated and too publicity conscious to exploit his power...

                  Honorable Mention (Alphabetically ordered)

                  • Max Baer
                  • Ezzard Charles
                  • Jersey Joe Walcott
Foreman's Top 10. I remember him explicitly stating Ali was better than him. So that's everyone above Ali and Vitali and Lewis who are not on the list.
