Andre Berto: Good but not Great

After watching Berto vs. Zaveck just confirmed what I've always believed is that Berto isn't really that good. It was pointed by Roy Jones, Jr. that Berto fights on his toes which doesn't allow him to achieve maximum power in his punches. This is very true, but I see a far worse and more dangerous conclusion to this problem. Him fighting on his toes makes him top heavy causing him not take punches well. Every time Zaveck hit him with a good punch he didn't accept it very well. It usually caused him to momentarily lose balance over and over again. I don't know much about Zaveck, but Berto against better opposition hasn't shown us much. Another point, Max Kellerman liken Berto to Meldrick Taylor due to having a very decent offense but no defense. I don't see Berto beating Ortiz in a rematch except by a lucky punch. Berto vs. the other guys at 147:

Manni Pac = sure KO loss
Victor Ortiz = loss or KO loss
Jan Zaveck = won the first but didn't look good
Vyacheslav Senchenko = don't know about him
Rafal Jackiewicz = don't know about him
Mike Jones = good step up fight for Jones...who knows, but Jones has better skills.
Shane Mosley = sure KO loss...Berto won't escape the right hand or left hook.
Kell Brooks = haven't seen enough of him, but a good fighter
Selcuk Aydin = don't know about him
Floyd Mayweather = he'd look like an amateur
Luis Callazo = he beat him the first time
Randall Bailey = True Vet., possible KO for Bailey

Thanks for the correction I misunderstood what Roy said. Berto is still very top heavy and in my opinion not flat footed enough for his style. He lifts his heels a little too much to stand toe to toe with top fighters.

Ordinary fighters don't win multiple titles. Berto is good but he's far from great. His speed and grit keeps him in the circle of big fights but a good athlete is going to beat him. Problem is there isn't many good athletes at 147 other than maybe 5 guys so Berto is here to stay. If he actually worked on his defense he might be able to beat a few of these good athletes.

at these day and age, with HBO protection, yeah it does make an ordinary fighter become champion.
