In a highly spectacular heavyweight battle Juan Carlos Gomez, former WBC cruiserweight champion, scored a well deserved, though hard fought, unanimous decision over ten rounds against dangerous American Oliver McCall, a former WBC heavyweight champion. McCall, despite being 40 years old, impressed with his strength and stamina as he went after the eight years younger Gomez in the two final rounds in search of a knockout. But as the Cuban had alreardy established a clear lead on the scorecards, the late rally of McCall wasn’t enough. Gomez, who won by scores of 98:92 (twice) and 96:94, improved his record to 40-1 with 33 knockouts and can now expect to rise in the rankings of the WBC. The man from Chicago who was talking to his opponent during the fight until he was warned for this by the referee dropped to 45-9 with 32 knockouts.
