I completely disagree with the highlighted statement. Gamboa probably had the most professional-ready style of all the Cuban defectors. Yuri fights like a cross between Mike Tyson and Roy Jones, Jr. I'm not alone in this observation. Gamboa seeks the knockout from the opening bell; he throws punches with bad intentions. "Amateur style" implies playing it safe and throwing punches intended to score, not end a fight.
Adrien Broner vs Yuriorkis Gamboa

Gamboa has the option of winning this fight on volume alone (never mind the speed, intangibles and punching advantage). Broner isn't that active, and only lets his hands go when he sees a clear opening. I personally thought Dr Leon outworked him by 2 rounds.Comment

No, ametuer style is jumping in and throwing flurries trying to overwhelm your opponent, like amir khan. Like I said he has speed and he has power and thats what hes been getting by on but nothing about Gamboa reminds me of tyson besides the way he looks.I completely disagree with the highlighted statement. Okay...we disagree on what constitutes "amateur style."
Gamboa is gifted with amazing speed; his power is pretty impressive, as well. When an athlete possesses such ability, he's liable to use it as long as he can and for as long as he can. I don't see anything necessarily wrong with that. The fact that Yuri is so overwhelmingly talented in athleticism, speed and power might make it seem that he's not especially skilled. Don't buy that. Gamboa is indeed highly skilled. If anything, his reliance on his natural abilities makes him more vulnerable than he has to be.
The fight with Salido was Yuri's toughest test. He displayed ability beyond his natural gifts. Orlando managed to have Gamboa engage in a fight, not a boxing match. Yuri won that fight without too much trouble, and without excessive "jumping in and throwing flurries."Comment

LoL at the guy saying his style is between Tyson n Jones. Other then the speed n power his style is nothing like them. But that's all he needs right now, speed n power. Broner might be more skilled but his not ready for the punches that are gonna land on him. Hell he didn't even want to engage De Leon cause he knew that anything solid that De Leon would land could of change the fight.Comment

Yuri is hyper-aggressive, like Tyson; he's explosive and almost exclusively throws power shots.Yet, Gamboa is highly athletic, like Jones; he doesn't block many punches, but uses his offense as defense. Yuri quickly closes the gap with his opponents and swarms. His speed, power and athleticism allow him to do things that most other fighters cannot hope to. Gamboa indeed conjures images of a Tyson/Jones, Jr. hybrid.LoL at the guy saying his style is between Tyson n Jones. Other then the speed n power his style is nothing like them. Broner is a technician; he likes to creep up, find openings through his guard and pot-shot. He's not busy enough. Right now, Adrien is no where near ready to take on Gamboa. He can't keep a guy like Yuri off of him. Broner's defense isn't as good as it should be (or as he thinks it is). He was hit way too often by Ponce De Leon in their fight. Ponce is no speed demon, to say the least. Adrien would be repeatedly swarmed by a much faster, harder hitting fighter in Gamboa. The fight would end with Broner on the canvass.Last edited by CubanGuyNYC; 08-24-2011, 12:23 PM.Comment
