Being he went up and fought the top 154/160 champ in his current shape, absolutely. Unfortunately, it's not going to happen being the reward doesn't outweigh the risk heavily. In the case with Pacquiao, there's still a risk, but the reward is much grander than a Martinez fight could or would ever be. It's like the fans in the 80s who wanted to see a Pryor vs Leonard match. It just wasn't going to happen.
After Ortiz if Floyd fights Martinez,is e p4p#1?

when floyd beats ortiz... then beats sergio, he EASILY overtakes pac... sergio would be the most meaningful fight for floyd's legacy (other than pac). for floyd to fight sergio @ 154, it would shake up the boxing world. it would contradict what everyone assumes floyd would & wouldnt do. wouldnt matter much business-wise, since sergio isnt mainstream... but definitely career-defining for floyd.Comment

I've said before and i'll say it again; If Mayweather or Pacquiao want to leave no question as to who the best fighter of our time is without fighting eachother, then all roads lead to Sergio Martinez.
Don't expect any rational response from these *******s though, May could beat Ortiz, Pac & Khan and he'd still be behind Pac to the nuthuggers.Last edited by AllEyesOpen; 08-23-2011, 11:08 AM.Comment

There was never any question amongst real fans as to whether Floyd Mayweather IS the real king of boxing.
Floyd beats everyone in every category.
Floyd has remained undefeated the longest.
Floyd has consistently fought the better opposition(#1 & #2) in each division.
Floyd has a 14 year reign in boxing.
Floyd didn't pad his record with 40-50 bum fights. He fought a HOF in his 18th fight.
Floyd's opponents are in better standings when he fights them than other current top boxer's opponents who are coming off losses or have been damaged.
Floyd doesn't rely on acquiring VACANT TITLES in place of WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS to thicken up his resume.
This isn't a matter of opinion. Its mathematics. Look at his record. Look at his opponent's record at the time when he fought them and their standings in the sport of boxing. Look at his longevity at the top. And then, factor in that Floyd became the #1 star and boxer AFTER having left Bob Arum.
After doing all that, look at whichever boxer you might think is at the top, then look at the padding in his record. Then look at who he fought for his first world championship. Then look at how many vacant titles he competed for. Look at the standings of his opponents when he fought them. Were they coming off a big loss or a string of losses? Or did they have a major win over a top fighter before they fought whoever you think is at the top?
Like I said, its mathematics.
Opinions are nice, but they don't change real accomplishments. They also don't change hype into substance.
Anyone who is to be considered the top anything .. be it a basketball player, baseball player or boxer ... should be able to have their careers and accomplishments stand up to heavy scrutiny.
Hell, politicians are scrutinized much more heavily than professional athletes and they aren't paid even close to a fraction of what pros get paid.
Buck up and be real.Comment

Larry to me if he beats Ortiz he will be P4P #1 and you know I dont like the guy. I just cant see how pac has cherry picked his last 5 opponents and has not fought a live cat since cotto. Now he is doing the same thing to JMM and he gets praised and his minyons say its going to be a more competitve fight and more challenging than may vs ortiz? wowComment

I'm not a Floyd fan but there's no denying if beats Ortiz and Martinez..he would have to be #1 based on Mannys Opponents...but right now..no Pacquiao is still #1.Comment
