Was Chavez past prime by the time of the whitaker fight?

He wasn't at his peak by the time he fought Whitaker. He was in the tail end of his prime. But, he was in his prime.

By the time he fought Randall he was already past prime. But, the time he fought Oscar he was done at the elite level.

I think that fight singled the end of his prime. He wasn't at his peak at all. I believe that had left him some time before, but I would say he was at the very end of his prime and that fight ended it for good.

I've always put the 'prime' thing of a fighters career into two parts. Their peak years, which is inside their prime and represents them at their absolute best, peak physical years at their best, most natural weight etc. Their prime years, which is from the start of their career to when things just aren't the same anymore. Their body just can't do what it once did and the mind is often unwilling anyway.

Chavez wasn't in his peak years anymore and he was at the end of his prime years with that fight bringing an end to it all. Doesn't take away from Whitaker's performance though as it was amazing. Nonetheless, it would have been a truly exciting fight to have seen five years earlier.

No, I think he was still prime. Not his ultimate prime but he was definitely not past it. Whitaker would have schooled him in any day and age either way.
