  • Comments Thread For: Insider Notebook: Mares on Controversy; Antillon; More

By Robert Morales - Abner Mares is not one of those boxers who runs off at the mouth, showing disdain for anyone and everyone he comes across. He's a respectful sort, but he's been made to feel like something other than that since taking Joseph "King Kong" Agbeko's bantamweight world title in this past Saturday's Showtime tournament finale in Las Vegas.

Controversy was created when referee Russell Mora warned Mares several times for low blows, but never took a point from Mares. In the 11th round, Mares was credited with a knockdown instead of penalized for landing a low blow. The punch was headed low, Agbeko caught part of it with his glove and then it landed low. Agbeko fell to the canvas.

In other words, there are points involved here where, had Mora called things differently Agbeko could have gotten a decision or at the least a draw. Instead, he received a majority-decision loss, and now Mares is receiving a lot of unkind messages from hating fans.

Speaking Tuesday by telephone prior to the IBF ordering a rematch between he and Agbeko, Mares talked about the bittersweet and controversial night he won't soon forget. [Click Here To Read More]

I say, Abnutt Mares has a thick skull and skin. Good for him. Hope he doesn't kill himself with all the negativity. Stay humble and stay positive in the face of criticism. At least, he is getting his hate now and learn from it. Unlike Duckweather who started out being all loved and now one of the most disliked/liked hated/loved boxer out there.

does'nt matter where the punches landed. thigh, right leg, left leg,or butt. if its under the belt then its a low blow. mares will be watched in the rematch.it was a good fight and will be a great rematch.

Now a decent guy would have said, "Sorry for the low blows. I did not intend them to be low and did not really realise it at the time, but on watching the replay it is clear I was straying and the knockdown was not fair. I'm glad we are having a rematch where I can set the record straight with a fair victory."

Instead Mares is trying to justify things... saying Agbeko was being dramatic after he punched him square in the nuts. I don't care if it was partially blocked, it was still hitting the cup.

Yeah, I kind of agree with post above me. Mares seems like a tool. I don't think it will ever erase what he did that night, he doesn't even care he punched some guy in the nuts lots of times. Sure some of them may have hit the belt-line but alot of them hit the cup region too. You don't have every showtime announcer starting flipping out like that unless you're doing something illegal. They have a better view at ringside than we do with our certain camera angles.

While it's true that Russell Mora deserves the vast amount of criticism for the job he did on Saturday night - it still doesn't take away from the fact that it was MARES throwing the punches. And from the interview/video he did with ESPN (?) for a study of low blows and what it does to the testicles and the brains reactions, Mares knows FULL WELL what effect 378 pounds of pressure (Mares punch) does to the groin. He also knows full well that repeated punches to that area will have an effect on the fighter taking those punches. Mares comes off as pretty lacsidaisial about it, and with that attitude he is guaranteed to pick up where he left off with the low blows. He will be unable to help himself, even though I don't think they are neccessarily intentional on his part.

Also, it's assinign for someone to say "You get away with what you can get away with". Now that sounds dirty. Sanchez should have said "A dirty fighter will get away with what he can get away with". But of course a fighter is not going to stop what they're doing if a ref doesn't force them to stop. Mares has put himself in a tough spot for the rematch because his body punches are going to be under a microscope now. Hopefully he really works on bringing them up in training camp. He's got tremendous talent and seems to be a nice guy, but also acting as if he did nothing wrong is a bit naive or care-less on his part.

And Schaefer, pssht... All I can do is shake my head when that man speaks. Yea, Mora had a "bad day at the office". But when normal people have a bad day at the office, it usually doesn't affect how another persons day goes. In this case, Mora goes home and says "Oh well, tomorrow is a new day". Joesph Agbeko goes home minus a championship belt and with balls the size of g****fruits. And Schaefer sounds like a jilted junior high kid with the 'We've gotten the short stick so many times that it was our turn to draw the long stick'. WTF, are you kidding me?

Zab Judah's testicles are so sensitive that, when he watched the Mares/Agbeko fight Saturday night and he saw the 11th round low blow knock down call............. HE fell on the floor, grabbed his crotch and started crying in pain.
