No he wasnt. He sat on his ass for 11 months trying to duck Vitali and the commision had enough and said if you dont give him a rematch we will strip your belt. So he retired a few weeks before he was going to be stripped of his title.

His last memory of his last fight is him being BOO'd out of the ring with HBO hating on him and saying "we all know who REALLY won the fight"

Lewis almost ended vitals career if the fight wasn't stopped.. And for the people you are saying vitali landed more punches than Lewis, who cares at that stat.. Lewis landed the stronger harder punches.. Ya there is a possibility that vitali could of won the rematch but that's where it stops.

Lewis won the fight, despite being down on the cards. At the time Lewis fought Vitali, he was already semi-retired. He had faded some. The reason why he didn't want the rematch is because he simply didn't have it mentally to fight these younger, hungrier fighters anymore. In the rematch, he might have lost, then there would likely have to be a trilogy. It wasn't necessary for him to put his body through that anymore at his age. Bottom line: To fight a guy like Vitali, you can't half ass it and he just didn't have the desire to go through another hard fight or hard fights. He had to consider his health.
