  • Comments Thread For: Mares-Agbeko Rematch Necessary For Tourney Closure

By Jake Donovan - Last weekend’s title fight between Abner Mares and Joseph Agbeko was supposed to provide the network with the closure it has long sought dating back to its failed attempt at a prospect-based super middleweight tournament some five years ago.

However, not even a definitive outcome can leave anyone involved with the satisfaction of believing there still isn’t unfinished business left in the bantamweight division.

An argument can be made that an uncertain future awaited the winner of the Showtime bantamweight tournament no matter the outcome. The last man standing was never going to be hailed the best in the division, nor was there ever the promise of an even bigger prize waiting in the wings. [Click Here To Read More]

A rematch is imperative and also makes the most financial sense. IMO the IBF should declare the first fight a No Contest and return the belts to Agbeko. Not only is this the correct course of action in these circumstances, considering the abundant incompetence displayed by referee Mora on Saturday night and how his poor officiating fundamentally impacted the fight, but also it will effectively force Mares and Goldenboy in to a position where they'd find it difficult to refuse the immediate rematch option.

As much grief as we generally give the sanctioning bodies, the IBF generally does the right thing more often than any other group. They're playing this one by the numbers and I trust will ultimately make the right call.

But honestly, I'd love to see Showtime "encourage" a rematch. They hold a considerable amount of leverage here. No other US outlet is throwing good money at lower weight fighters, and considering that they hold an option on Mares' next fight, Showtime can find a way get GBP on board for a rematch without necessarily forcing its hand.

Your suggestion might sound right and fair, but it probably will never happen. There will be total chaos in Vegas and everywhere else that made a payout for this fight if the IBF decides to change it into a "No Contest"...

Great if a rematch occurs, but Nevada needs not to give more a second chance...he needs to be suspended, permanently...no answer he gives can be correct as to his actions...I wouldn't trust him, now, for nothing beyond 4 rounds, and that'a stretch...he smells of CORRUPTION!!!

Supposedly it will be a while before he does any more high profile bouts but I'll believe that when I see it. But it's already confirmed he won't be suspended for his actions, just "demoted".

Im obviously a mares fan, but i jus slowed down every punch on my dvr, n they were all on the belt, except for the knockdown on the 11th that was right on the cup n some glove, some others landed jus on the border under the belt but hes head was being pull down, i thought mares had blew it n i was real pissed, but when i see them real slow on my 60in LED HD they were on the belt, im not sure whats the rule on belt punches, but if belt punches are also illegal then he cheated hes way thru
