Donaire saw a proposed Aug. 27 bout on the Golden Boy-promoted Marcos Maidana-Robert Guerrero undercard fall through.
“I have a large amount of family and friends here in the Bay Area, and I promise that I would help sell tickets and contribute to the crowd,” Glenn said, “but I guess I’m off the card for now.”
Many have speculated whether the decision of Glenn’s younger brother Nonito Jr. to fight for Top Rank after flirting with a move to Golden Boy had any effect on the fight falling apart. After all, among the reported stipulations was that Nonito, the current WBC/WBO bantamweight champion, had to return a $300,000 bonus to Golden Boy.
Glenn, who recently repaired a strained relationship with his brother, gave his opinion on the matter.
“I hope [Golden Boy’s] still thinking about me, but if not, I pray that when Nonito comes back from the Philippines, that he’ll help me like he said he would and help me get a spot on his next undercard.”
Until then, the “Filipino Bomber” waits for his next assignment that he hopes will lead him on a path to his third—and possibly final—world title shot.
