    Bare Knuckles boxing

The Association of Boxing Commissions (“ABC”), a national organization of state and tribal boxing and combat sport commissions, has condemned a “bare knuckle” boxing contest, held at the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation Casino and Hotel in Fountain Hill, Arizona (outside of Scottsdale) on August 5, 2011, as being “abhorrent, barbaric, egregious, in contravention of a multitude of federal, state, and tribal boxing laws and regulations, and, perhaps, criminal.” The “bare-knuckle” boxing contest pitted Bobby Gunn (whom, it has been purported, helped spearhead the event), with a professional boxing record of 21-4-1 (18 wins by KO), against Richard Stewart with a professional boxing record of 14-9-2 who lost the last five boxing contests in which he participated. According to news accounts, “in the third round, Gunn launched a devastating assault on Stewart’s body, followed up by a crisp left hook to the jaw, bringing Stewart to the canvas. Upon getting up, Stewart was grazed with a right cross on the top of his head, dropping him again.” The bout was then stopped “in the best interest of Stewart’s health.”

Because this “bare-knuckle” boxing contest took place on the tribal land of the Yavapai Nation, it was outside the jurisdiction of, and was not regulated by, the Arizona State Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts Commission. It is not known if the Yavapai Nation has formed its own tribal boxing commission; or, if so, whether the event was regulated by the Yavapai Nation’s boxing commission. As noted by ABC President Tim Lueckenhoff, under Federal Law, “no person may arrange, promote, organize, produce, or fight in a professional boxing match” unless the match is supervised and regulated by an authorized boxing commission and subject to the most recent version of the recommended regulatory guidelines certified and published by the ABC, as well as any additional relevant professional boxing regulations; and, if a professional boxing contest is regulated by a tribal boxing commission, the tribe must have health and safety standards, licensing requirements, and other requirements relating to the conduct of professional boxing that are at least as restrictive as the standards of the state in which the tribal land is located.

Mr. Lueckenhoff stated that this “bare-knuckle” boxing contest violated “just about every rule in the book”.

The ABC will further investigate these matters with the possibility of a referral to the U.S. Attorney’s Office toward the ends of barring any such activity in the future, instituting a criminal prosecution, or both.

Wow in this day and age a bare knuckles fight really, youtube streetfights are enough for me,things like this further tarnish our sport.

I don't have a problem with bare-knuckle boxing. In fact, I like it. I like all combat sports, as long as they're handled properly and the participants' health is paramount. Bare-knuckle boxing is more brutal in some ways than conventional boxing, but it can easily be argued that regular boxers sustain more damage to their brains than their bare-fisted counterparts.

The earliest UFC fights were essentially bare-knuckle contests. The fledgling sport held several events before the organizers were pressured to institute new rules to make the fights "less barbaric". When you think about it, this recent bare-knuckle event was really no different in principle than when UFC began.

I don't think bare-knuckle boxing tarnishes anything. The fight in question was probably a one-time show, never to be repeated in public.

Imagine if someone with true power like Randell Bailey for instance competed in one of these events, then you would probably see someone die in the ring, the gloves are there for a reason, this barbaric bullsht has no place in boxing, that tribe should be ashamed of themselves.

yeah put on gloves that way your brain can feel more shock since the face isnt getting damage you think its ok. The brain will suffer more damage with gloves on and repeated blows, bare knuckle ends quicker because of the damage done by the knuckles to your face

Boxing gloves and hand-wraps are meant to protect the fighters' hands, so that more blows can be delivered. It extends the fight and, therefore, the entertainment for the crowd. It also extends the damage done to the fighters' brains.

Power-punching fighters would have to be very careful about unloading a haymaker on their opponents. They could easily break their hands. Remember when Mike Tyson had that encounter with Mitch Green on a Harlem street? Tyson busted his hand on Green's face. Mitch sported a massive black eye after that run-in But he certainly didn't die from a bare-fisted blow delivered by one of the greatest one-punch KO artists in history.

I agree with Prescott: a bare-knuckle fight would cause greater visible, cosmetic damage, but the fighters would take less blows to the head. Less blows to the head equals less brain damage. The real reason why bare-knuckle fighting is illegal is because it's bloodier than regular boxing. The visible damage appears too cruel. It just turns people off.

Of course, that's why some studies have showed that there's less brain damage in MMA fighters, because the fight stops sooner. However, a punch to the face by a very strong puncher without using gloves could kill a person with a single blow. With gloves, that possibility is smaller because the gloves absorb a certain amount of the impact.
