The Weighing In Rules Must Be Changed

The Jose Luis Castillo scales fiasco with first the footsie by Dr No…or was it Dr Oz, and then the overweight shock plus the inevitable catch weight keystone cops cop out, did boxing very little credit.

I may be missing something here, but although we know that Diego’s weight come ring time was 149 pounds, what was Jose Luis’?

He’d been obliged to go back to the scales on the same day as the bout, about five hours before first bell, and required to weigh no more than 147 pounds which made him a welterweight. But what did he weigh come fight time? [details]

This article doesnt want to point out the fact that Corrales came in heavier than Castillo at fight time.Could this just be a load of crap for the rubber match.I think it is hard enough for fighter to train to get down to a certain weight.

Although I do like the idea of keeping your weight down till fight time.which is what Castillo had to do not Corrales.Corrales had all the time he wanted to recover while Castillo had to keep on excersising and keepin his weight/power down. All I saw in this fight was that Corrales isnt the same after the beating he took in the first fight.A rematch will only prove that further more.

If fighters had to weigh a certain weight the day of the fight, they woundnt be able to hydrate themselves properly, and it could lead to ring deaths or injuries. If anything they should make the weigh in a few days before, not just 1 day

I think that if one of the fighers doesn't make contracted wieght the fight should be off. The fight didn't have any belts on the line it was for show and money. Fine, however what if A fighter seriously got hurt or died, by not being able to re-hydrate and the get body ready for a professional boxing match.
If you cant make wieght, its time to move up. Its not necessarily the wieght issue itself to me, but rather the bodies condition going into the fight. (Heavywieghts give up huge wieght advatages all the time.)
I think by calling off the fights were a boxer didnt make weight would set examples that would give the sport the credibility it sorely needs.

Exactly. It's high time these fighters actually fought at a weight close to their "natural" weight. It is dangerous to cut so much just to come in at the weigh-in at a lower weight, then balloon up to face someone who may be naturally stronger.

The point was also made about heavyweights having huge disadvantages all the time. Nobody complains about this. The real danger in gaining weight between the weigh-in and fight for the lower weights is the toll it takes on the body...face it: draining one's self to make weight or ballooning back up after stepping off the scales is not healthy either way.

It's time these fighters tucked their chins and fought at the correct weights.

Weight rules should be changed in general. Instead of fighters squeezing in every possible pound to their advantage, they should have to weigh in an hour before the fight as well as a day before. That way there wont be 130 lb fighters fighting at 145. WHat's the point of those weight classes then? Do away with the tiniest of the weight classes and move everybody up to where they should be fighting. Save us all of a whole lot of problems.
