Comments Thread For: Humberto Soto, Erik Morales, WBC Tension Heats Up

The tension is building in Mexico. Former WBC lightweight champion Humberto "Zorrita" Soto is upset that Erik Morales, coming off a loss, was given the opportunity to fight for the WBC's vacant 140-pound title on September 17 against Lucas Matthysse, who also comes off a loss. Soto vacated his title and moved up in weight with the expectation that the WBC would reward him for his loyalty. The Mexican boxer has fought, and held their titles, for many years.

I don't think the WBC is going to sanction this fight because of Mathysse and it should be a different opponent if it's to be for a title like #4 Kendall Holt or the Nigerian Olusegunlt, who's ranked #1 by the WBC...

Yeah, but what about Mike Alvarado? Just kidding. There's a log-jam at 140. Lots of good contenders (Lucas Matthysse, Erik Morales, Humberto Soto, Devon Alexander, Kendall Holt) ... not to mention Khan, Maidana and Bradley. Throw their names in a hat and pick out two and you'd probably have a great fight. Humberto Soto deserves a shot as much as any of the others. Here's hoping Soto cools down and we see him in a title fight by December.

Soto is a joke. He fought nobodies to get those two WBC belts. Every time he stepped up in competition he lost (except to Juarez and Antillon). He never fought Valero for the lightweight belt, never defended it against Peterson when Peterson was his mandatory, never defended it against Rios when Rios beat the crap out of Peterson and called him out. Soto doesn't deserve a shot anymore than Morales!!! Period.

Did he really say he is going to take his business elsewhere? That statement right there proves that all these abc belts are meaningless. A title should be rewarded for being the best fighter in that division. You shouldn't get a belt because your loyal to a organization.

There is some serious corruption going on and there not trying to hide it.

I bet Soto's own family are so ashamed that they do their best to avoid him.Like when he pops around for a visit, they'll switch off the lights, turn the television off, hide under the table and pretend to not be home. The guy's just an embarrassment on so many levels. They should strip away his boxing license and kick him out of Mexico.
