Why hasnt Roberto Cammarelle turned Pro?

never heard of the guy. just checked out his wiki page. Dam wonder why he isnt going pro? Everytime i see a talented guy not going pro is a waste. But whatever makes him happy i guess.

Because his profession is being a 30 year old dude fighting 18 year olds at the olympics.

Dude is a big big joke, he will be fighting again at 2012 Olympics, I guess he makes enough cash off the medals and from Italian government. Dude has lost the Euro's for the last 2 years in a row, against Russian's too. Dude needed to turn pro and cash out.

I think he likes the Amateur system and the monthly stipend from the Italian government.

I dont know how much Italy gives its athletes for a gold? Probably like 150k or 200k, so he just does it for fun.

I am italian and an amateur boxer.

Here, the amateurs are well paid by the government, and, when an amateur has finished with boxing, retains a stable job in polizia (your cops :-) ). Cammarelle has alredy a wage, some sponsorship, prize money for his medals and, as I have alredy said, a future wage when he'll retire.

On the other hand, being a pro in Italy is a disaster. Do you know how much a boxer can get paid for an italian title fight? Not more than 3000 euro. And he has no job. Not now and not when he'll retire. No sparring partners at all. The only way is going in Germany.

But Cammarelle is not interested in pro (he did not want to join the WSB too!). He has sever back problems and at 30 he is too much used too amateurism. He did not want to turn pro 'till he won the gold in the Olympics, and after the gold in Beijing I think he decided to win another gold in London. I can't blame him, he can be alredy inscribed in the Felix Savon league. And of course there are even the money issues.

here in Italy btw the things is this: ****ty pros, great amateurs. We have, beside Cammarelle, Clemente Russo (silver Beijing, gold world championship in Chicago), Domenico Valentino (broze Beijing, gold WC in 2010). There are others very good amateurs too. In Europe, we have very few contenders.

You are right on some aspects, but the fact that Cammarelle is amateur because of the simple life stuff is totally wrong. In italy amateurs - right or wrong - are the big deal and the entire country wants the italian boxing team (lead by Cammarelle) to win some medals. In all honesty, we are expecting three golds at best. So it no simple life, even because - I can guarantee myself this thing - amateurs traing really hard here, and it is basically the reason why we have won many medals lately.

Thats what I meant, in Italy its better to be Amateur then be a pro. Because if you are Amateur like Roberto who won medals, all of country loves you and follows you. and Government pays you monthly fee just for rent,food,phone.
Its not worth it to him to turn pro because he will lose alot of money and he is not 21 years old, if he turns pro today it will take him 3-4 years of hard work just to make 100,000$ per fight.

or he can work as Police and still train for Olympics.

He makes $$$ from every Olympic Medal he wins
He makes $$$ every month for being Olympic participant and top HW boxer
He makes $$$ from commercials and sponsors
He gets alot of free stuff because he is so adored.

if he went pro he would have to pay for his training, pay for manager, coach, advisor, promotor, health insurance, etc. and if he get injured he will make $0

If he wins 2012 Gold he will be known as Italy greatest boxer and he will retire with all his country knowing his name, and he will have $$$ for life, he can also become coach in his future.

Lost to povetkin similar size and make up. I guess didnt want to grind through the ranks. Would he have beaten either klitschko tyson fury or prof aj. I dont believe so for he was 1 notch below povetkin which is good but if stayed fighting along the way as 1 not below povetkin hed been a high predigree so paid gatekeeper. Unlese could cut to cruiser then wouldve been a monster marco huck like reign.
