        No, Jones was not a real heavyweight champion by any means.

        He won a meaningless alphabet strap by beating a 3rd tier heavyweight in John Ruiz. If Jones was truly all about making history and winning THE title, he would have fought the REAL Champion, not the pathetic Ruiz...

          He fought a HW champion. Who didn't just win the strap and then take him on. Ruiz was the legit WBA champ at the time. Plus Lewis ducked Roy so it is what it is.

            Ruiz had just as good of a shot to beat Jones as he did Holyfield.

            It was a risky move for Jones and it paid dividends.
