It is a consensus list meaning most people will have a similar list with some minor differences... Nobody would have a list with Paulie Malinaggi as pound for pound #1, 2, or 3 however most everybody would agree that Manny Pac is the best lb for lb... Let me guess most of those who dislike the idea of a lb of lb are either floyd fans , klit fans or somebody that thinks their fighter is unjustly rated in the lb for lb and who the majority disagree with.. It is pretty much a distinction that has the approval of most of the fans.. You make the list, you are recognized by the fans or better be. Fighters also give it a lot of weight and most fighters want that recognition of being on that list.

        very good post....

brings back memories of the pac hatton bout....

hatton was then the linear champion at 140..

but he decided to go up the ring first as he said in effect that

"pac is the p4p champion and he (hatton) considers himself as the challenger"

p4p title being mythical and as it encompasses all weight categories together is what makes it more important even to boxers..

if fantasy match-ups between boxers are fun to discuss; with some even matching-up fighters decades apart; then why not the p4p? nothing new...

What makes a fighter great are the people who recognize them for being great... I can go against the grain and say SRR or Ali and say their greatness is hypothetical and sight reasons why for probably any fighter. The fact is the reason they are great is because we all recognize they are..It is the same with the lb for lb list... It is a recognition that is significant enough to be relevant in the minds of fans and the history of the sport.

It's an interesting debate for fun, but I agree people do tend to take it too seriously.
