Peterson-Cayo winner could face Khan in December

The winner of the Lamont Peterson-Victor Cayo junior welterweight fight, the 12-round Friday Night Fights main event in Las Vegas, could be the next opponent for THE RING’s No. 1-rated 140-pound fighter Amir Khan, according to the dual beltholder’s U.S. promoter, Richard Schaefer.

Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, told RingTV.com that Khan, who added Zab Judah’s IBF belt to his WBA title when he stopped the veteran in the five rounds on Saturday, wants to face one more opponent at 140 pounds before rising into the 147-pound welterweight limit in 2012.

Khan’s next bout could take place in December at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and according to Schaefer, the winner of Friday night's IBF eliminator between Peterson and Cayo "absolutely" would be a consideration for Khan in December, given that the triumphant fighter would become the organization's mandatory challenger to Khan.

"We were actually notified by the IBF that there would be a mandatory for Amir, which would be the winner of the Peterson-Cayo fight," said Schaefer. "So, we'll have to see how we're going to deal with that once we know who the winner of this fight is."

The 27-year-old Peterson (28-1-1, 14 KOs) of Washington, D.C., twice rose from the canvas to salvage December's majority draw with Victor Ortiz, the WBC's current welterweight beltholder.

The 26-year-old Cayo (26-1, 18 KOs) of the Dominican Republic has scored knockouts in the second and first rounds, respectively, since, himself, being stopped in the sixth round in March of 2010 by Marcos Maidana.

In February, talks for a Khan-Peterson fight broke off between Schaefer and Washington-based attorney, Jeff Fried, who represented Peterson and his manager and trainer, Barry Hunter.

Each sided provided different accounts as to what led to the break down of the talks for a bout that was headed to Khan's native England.

Schaefer said that Peterson was offered $300,000 to face Khan, but that he and Hunter demanded "North of that figure."

Fried said that terms were agreed to for an initial bout with Khan, but that he believed that the negotiations failed over the notion of a rematch in the event that Khan lost.

Another opponent who has been mentioned for Khan is three-division titleholder Erik Morales Morales (51-7, 35 KOs), who could meet either Anthony Crolla (21-2, 9 KOs) or Jorge Barrios (50-4-1, 35 KOs) on the Sept. 17 Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Victor Ortiz card in Las Vegas.

Another fight I would rather not be made.

This would at least be better than Morales. And with a win over Peterson, he without a doubt has the best resume at 140.

Why should Khan fight Peterson ffs? How many world titles has Peterson won? He is a glorified loser who got a gift decision against Ortiz and lost to Bradley.

Khan v Morales for the WBA Superworld, IBF and WBC plz!

I rather he rematch Prescott-McCloskey (im confident Prescott gonna win) winner or go straight up to 147 if he cant fight Bradley or Guerrero-Maidana winner than fight Morales or Peterson-Cayo winner.

Saying so maybe it the timing of the fight..

I know many will disagree but imo a win against Peterson is as good or better than the Maidana and Judah wins.
