I doubt any of you have seen him fight. Maybe once.
We have seen youtube clips of his fights and most knowledgeable people consider him as a sideshow act instead of a guy who held the same title as Johnson, Louis, Ali, and etc...
Primo Carnera is around the same size as both Klitschko's. And, if you look at Carnera style was very similar to Vitaly Klitschko. IMO pretty identical.
I also believe that Carnera gets somewhat underrated. Because, he was seen as a circus show during his heyday. And, you don't know which fights of his were on the up and up. So he does get a bad rap of not being that good cuz' of that good. So I think he gets underrated somewhat.
Saying that, Sugar once again is making outlandish statement. I don't believe Primo could hand with either Klitschko. Sugar for as much knowledge as he has. The things he say are just crazy.
When and where did he say/write this statement? I ask because I’m shocked Bert Sugar would make such a claim. I understand that sometimes context can be misconstrued, but by comparing Canera (who was mostly a product of mobsters fixing his fights) to the Klitschkos is fairly insulting. I hope he was just trying to make a joke regarding how much he hates their fighting style.
Why would you be shocked? Bert has made much more crazier/worse/shocking claim than this one.
This one is not as bad as some of his other opinion TBH.
I think he said it after being really bored at the Wladimir v. Ibragimov fight. He doesn't like the Klitschkos, so he said this as more of an insult than a true statement.
naw i watched several of his fights and hes not that good. i believe vitali would beat him but vlad might have problems. its hard to compare the past fighters because to put it simply they had way more balls. a guy like baer should not be able to beat carnerra on paper but damn he made it look like fun. i really believ men were tougher back then.
Carnera had gigantism. He was only big because of his genetic disease. Those types are never as athletic, coordinated or well made as people who naturally attain their height; look at Valuev for an example of this taken to the extreme.
I do think Carnera has become a bit underrated though. He wasn't totally terrible, had a decent jab and decent power, and trained hard to be the best he could be. Which unfortunately wasn't that good.
As for Sugar, I acknowledge his vast boxing knowledge, in the same way I acknowledge the vast knowledge collected in an excylcopedia, but as for his ability to analyse and work on that information and come out with accurate or insightful comments, he long ago convinced me that he hasn't got a frikkin clue.
