This guy was a BADBOY back in the day, i was suprised when i heard about this because when you think of Michael Watson you think of a uncomplicated, law-abiding, church-going, God-fearing nice guy, that was NOT what Michael Watson was before the accident. Indeed he had many more 'accidents' before that tragic accident in Sept 91,, like cheatin on his wife every weekend and having double figures ammount of kids by different women. He would be out every night when he wasnt in trainin and smoking weed all the time. He spent a yr away from the ring becos he fell out with Mickey Duff and went on ******* binges with his badboy freinds, he eventualy came back to the ring when Duff got him his world title shot and got his ass well and truly handed to him by Mike Mccallum. Watson was also a dealer back in the day accordin to Gary Mason becos he really did not make alot of money from boxing due to lacking the charisma of a Bruno or a McGuigan or a Benn or a Eubank.
and u think that he became Mr nice guy after becomin wheelchair-bound? Think again, theres an article below from 1999 where Benn says that Watson rang him up in 1995 askin him if he wanted some coke-
NIGEL BENN put the telephone down on Michael Watson four years ago and has not spoken to his former conqueror since then.
Watson, Benn insists in his book Dark Destroyer, said to him: “So, Nige are you off the gear?”
Benn would like to bury that particular hatchet now that Watson has won his case against the British Boxing Board of Control following the injuries he sustained in the ill fated fight against Chris Eubank in 1991.
However, the former WBC and WBO middle and super middleweight champion asserts that other fighters in Britain are involved in drugs.
Benn said: “I got drug tested all the time and there are lot of boxers I know do that. I don’t care about them, they were knocking me down but they are putting gear up their noses and they’ve got nothing now.
“I’m talking about here (in Britain), the backstabbers, they are jealous because I’ve kept hold of mine (money) and not put nothing up my nose like them. I don’t deal with them, they know who they are.
“You don’t go and win two world titles and defend them so many times. I got off my backside and achieved something. I’ve got five kids to look after, that’s why I’m annoyed.
“But now I’d like to talk to Michael and say ‘well done’, he needed help.”
In the book, Benn refers to the conversation with Watson - who stopped him in six rounds in 1989 - which caused the disharmony.
“One day we were talking on the phone and he said to me, ‘So, Nige, you off the gear?’ ‘What gear?’ ‘You know, the white gear ... the charlie (*******).’
“I couldn’t believe what he was saying. I said: ‘Let me tell you something. I ain’t never been on the gear to get off the gear. Why you coming to me asking these questions?’ ‘I heard it from other people.’ ‘See you later, Michael.’
“I was really upset that Michael thought I might be doing that stuff. I’ve had plenty of offers and there are plenty of boxers who I know have been on Special K.
“Some of them have retired and some are still fighting and they know who they are without me naming them.
“I even confronted a guy who was bad mouthing me and he was shoving charlie up his nose at the time.”
Despite being retired nearly three years, the Benn magic still lives and he signed copies of the book for three hours in London yesterday. But he does not miss the sport which made him rich and famous and, though still looking in good shape, weighs close to 14 stone, almost two stones above his fighting weight.
“I’ve had a good career and a colourful life,” Benn said at the launch. On Fridays and Saturdays he performs as a DJ. Much of his other time is spent looking after his children and cooking.
“I don’t want to be on the boxing circuit, but I like my former promoter Frank Warren,” he said. “We had a great time together. He had the problems with Don King but I know he’ll pick himself up and dust himself down and come through with flying colours.”
Benn tips Manchester light welterweight Richard Hatton as his British star of the future.
He said: “I think he can go all the way. He keeps his cool and is a good body puncher.”
Its no secret that Watson was very jealous of Benn, after he became Benns conqueror Benn instantly went to america instead of foldin in and became a star in america while Watson became the forgotten man, Benn winning the world title in exciting fashion, it was ironic Benn beat Dewitt in the very month that Watson succumbed to Mccallum. Watsons career was closin in while Benns was openin up, and Watson was the guy who beat Benn! Benn and Eubank earned £500,000 each from their first fight, Watson earned £5,000 on their undercard. i can understand why he was angry.
He didnt become a real christian until he was disabled, he used to be a real bad ass. I really respect Watson for his courage and his fightback from injury and it was such a shame what happened to him because he had sorted himself out for the Eubank fights and got himself in tremendous shape and even looked unbeatable on that tragic night, but unfortunately Watson is still an angry man in honesty because he knew he could of been the best of the lot and didnt become a millionaire until his compensation from the british boxing board of control 10 yrs after his injury whereas Benn and Eubank made millions when they were boxing. An angry old man who is jealous of other british fighters, here are some recent quotes "Calzaghe still has a long way to go, who has he beat? Anybody can keep a title that long by fighting nobodies", "The Grim Reaper should stick to modelling and the **** industry, I'd of won every minute of every round against him", "Amir Khan, what has he done? Who is he? Why is he getting all this attention?", "Ricky (Hatton) is a grafter and a nice kid, but he needs to learn defence more and he needs to pick his punches better", referring to Audley Harrison "He could turn out to be the best british boxer since Michael Watson",
