"hahol" and "maskal" really have no negative connotation -- these are 19th century terms that were left in the country-side language...

as, I said, I am from a 50/50 family (half-Ukrainin and half-Russian) and I grew up in Western Ukraine and I also lived in 1989-1993 in the heartland of Russia, and I could say that ordinary Urkainians and Russians have good respect for each other, all in all.

I think Ukrainian independence is really a good thing, as it will help improve the true cultural ties.
