Originally posted by vB MartinTracy, I've always thought of you as one of the smarter posters on here, I never thought I would have to explain this to you.
When fighters are trying to make weight, they dehyrate themselves, sometimes even making sure there is nothing in their bowels, so that when they step on the scales all their weight is muscle and bone.
After the weigh in, they rehydrate, replenishing their bodily fluids, so they step into the ring heavier, closer to their "walking around weight".
When a fighter comes in nearly 4 lbs heavier at the weigh in, that is muscle mass, as they have already drained their body of all excess fluids.
Regardless of the fact that Corrales (might have) weighed more than Castillo when they stepping into the ring, Castillo couldn't make the contracted weight because he was carrying extra muscle.
Last I heard, muscle is stronger than water.
If you can't understand after that explanation I will have to conclude it's because you don't want to. I know from experience on here that you're a knowledgable fan.
so castillos overweight must have been do to muscle.planned or not.because now i see another big money rubbermatch for the belts at 135.planned by castillos promoter or not.

Bottom line is that Corrales had to endure this extra suffering and Castillo didn't, thus not making it an even playingfield...that is why 3 lbs is indeed a HUGE deal. I saw the fight and Castillo looked a great deal more vigorous than Corrales, no doubt due in large part to the less physical stress that he had to endure. In the first fight Castillo landed his signature left hook over and over and they didn't have KO effect until the 10th round, so why the sudden, emphatic change this time around? My feeling is that those 3 lbs. were critical, just 24 hours before the fight Castillo had an unfair advantage which led to an uncharacteristic and totally uncanny, vicious knockout that only a more nourished and healthier fighter can inflict on a more physically stressed man.
AMEN!!!!!! Anotha strong post fo ta intelligent people of tis forum.

hmm
If you can find anything in any of my posts about Castillo trying to lose muscle mass, your initial reply to me might make sense or have some credence.
Basically, you said Castillo had extra muscle mass( so yes I can say you said that). You said the xtra weight means he had more muscle mass than is normally the case, which is false, or at the very least, cannot be proved. He knew he wouldn't make weight is a more likely claim and so he did not dehydrate fully after missing weight, but instead went ahead and had a drink causing him to go to 138.5.
Additionally, the rib injury...if you choose not to believe then ok, that is your right I guess.
Peace.

homer comment..totaly rediculous.
Castillo won the fight period. If Corrales had a problem..he shouldn't have shown up.
I'm tired of excuses after every fight from fans of fighters. All Chico had to do was not get knocked out.....by the way I gave full credit to Chico after the first fight and said the same to Castillo..............all he had to do in the first fight is not get knocked out.

Originally posted by Super_LightweightActually, you are mistaken, VBMartin. I know this because I actually do fight.
The reason Castillo was overweight was because he knew he couldn't make weight due to inuring a rib in camp, which means he lost training time and couldn't burn all the fight he is used to burning. Additionally, fighters do not lose muscle mass to make weight hardly ever. Rarely it happens. Either way it was a no issue in this fight because Castillo had a bit of xtra fat on him and WATER because he kne he wouldn't make weight and decided to start hydrating himself a bit.
So there ya go, Tracy.
I did get curious about the subject cause it's one of my weakest pt's when it comes to boxing. This is a quote from Dr. Flip Homansky from the book "Ringside and Training Principals" that I found very interesting:
"We have studied over 1200 consecutive fighters in terms of weight gain in the 24 hr's between weigh in and the actual fight. There was NO direct correlation between a significant weight gain and either winning or losing. Just as many fighters lost their bout after gaining more than 5% of their body weight as won. Significant weight gain didnt appear to help the heavier fighter. The highest correlation of winning was with 2 to 3% weight gain. This makes sense; starve and dehydrate yourself then gorge on food. The result is stomach cramps, frequent diarrhea and most importantly you will feel sluggish going into the fight. The pounds you put on during this period dont replace what you lost".
Hmmmm.......
