Gamboa should fight in Miami

I'd blame the promoters before the fans. I'm Puerto Rican and Cuban myself, and I'm not running out to see any and every PR / Cuban fighter that's out there based on their nationality. ****, I can't fathom the idea of running to see Kermit Cintron lol.

These next couple fights for Gamboa though will definitely be crucial into how big of a star he'll really be.

Not sure I agree on the bold. Promoters stake their time and money on where they think they can make even more money. It's business. If someone thought it made good business sense to promote fights in Miami they would. No one wants to be the pioneer that popularized the idea but ran out of loot just as the enterprise took off.

I agree about Gamboa's next couple of fights. And I'll add this: If he fulfills the star potential he has and becomes more widely known, the Cubans will come out to support him. Too bad they can't do that now....

(BTW, lol @ the Kermit line. Poor guy, he can't draw on the fan-base like other P.R. fighters.)

Someone told me the Cubans in Miami are all fake and Americanized and dont even care about Cuba or Cubans, any truth to this?

But yea like dude said, I see alot of small time MMA shows in Florida than Boxing.

But its sad with the Marlins and the Panthers/Lightning, why even have 2 teams for hockey? The lightning are a pretty good team too.

Marlins are just sad, everytime they show a game there its always empty, what are tickets like $9?

I heard for the Lightning you can get a ticket for like $20 which includes a hot-dog and free parking, lol. Why arent people coming out for cheap entertainment?

Here the Leafs havent made the playoffs in YEARS but tickets sell out in seconds and it will cost you like 100$+ for the nosebleed section + $20 parking + 10$ drinks.

Yea, the sports fans here are horrible. I mean, I myself am still wondering why in the hell they made a new stadium (dome mind you) for a team (The Marlins) who THIS year had a whopping 700 person attendance in one of their games!! They rely heavily on the opposing team's fans (i.e Mets, Phillies, Braves).

I actually think there's a bigger MMA push than Boxing as far as the consistency of the cards that are made here.

But shouldn't we assume that the lack of boxing cards down here in the first place is partly to blame. I mean I remember the horrible fights that are thrown down here. However, Berto and Cintron are not really headliners to boast about. They would not draw anywhere. Comparatively, Juanma fights in one of the small rooms of the MSG and gets no draws there, I've attended. I mean thats the Garden... NYC. Are we to say that that is a huge success business-wise? I find it hard to fathom that Juanma vs Gamboa in Miami wouldn't have been a huge hit had Juanma remained unblemished.

I think the lack of cards down here are just as guilty as the fans. Fans are just not used to hearing about cards down here. And when they do it's usually a Berto, Cintron, or FNF... That isn't appealing to ANY casual fan in ANY town. Then you have the REAL headliners... Manny fought Clottey in Dallas and sold out. Neither Pac or Clottey were from TX, Mexican, or even American for that matter and sold it out. I know if Pacman or Floyd fought down here it would sell out the Triple A quickly with no problems. The reason is that fans recognize an EVENT.

Then you have an aspect of grooming a prospect in a city where he is known well. Cotto is well known, followed, and respected in NYC. His fights on the eve of the PR Day Parade show this. Cotto was allowed to grow in the hearts of his NYC fans due to his fighting in NYC for major bouts. You look at another example such as Canada's Jean Pascal. I was dazzled when I saw the turn up at the Bell Centre when he fought HOFer Hopkins. It was an epic event to them. I mean comparatively Bernard the HOFer, can't even draw in his own backyard of Philly and I believe this might be because he doesn't usually showcase there (though I can be wrong). As far as Pascal is concerned.... He has grown in the hearts of the people of Quebec and has fought 26 of his 29 fights in Quebec and has reaped the benefits of his fan loyalty full on. He draws massive crowds there. Bute has also fought 24 of his 29 fights in Quebec... Result, massive crowds.... Gamboa on the other hand, has never technically fought in Miami.. He has fought 3 times in Fort Lauderdale which is like calling New Jersey, New York.

Miami does have the worst overall sports fans... But aren't we to also assume the community isn't given many opportunities to embrace boxing as well... I feel like Gamboa could have grown into much more down here had he been put in EXCITING fights long ago instead of force feeding fans with nonsense not named Lopez, Donaire, John, even smaller Marquez.

I guess in the end, Miami and boxing might be better off dating other people.

Miami has a huge hispanic population, apart from the Cubans. Since there are bigger boxing venues like Las Vegas and Atlantic City, the main allure for Miami would be to draw the Cuban population to the fights and watch their countrymen. Trouble is, the Cuban community doesn't seem to be particularly interested in boxing. The Cuban defectors that are currently fighting haven't been in the U. S. for very long. They're still building fan-bases and even recognition in the Cuban community.

There have been some shows featuring Cuban boxers broadcast from Miami. But the day when Cuban fighters can produce enough interest to warrant a big event is still down the road.

gamboa is a whole differenet animal though, of course yudel jhonson isnt going to sell any tickets. but you put gamboa in miami and i guarantee you he draws at least 10k. for god's sake solis drew 8k for that wack austin fight

as far as being Americanized its part true, most of the cubans that came in the 60's 70's definitely are, matter of fact i can guarantee you that mos of the cuban fans that follow gamboa came in the 90's and 00's.
