Wtf kinda parents named their kids first name the same as the last? is it just out of laziness or is it a custom in his ethnicity?

that culture often names after fathers and grandfathers etc, changing middle and last names..

they are both pronounced the same, he is an ethnic australian, have seen him box locally a few times, him and his brothers are top blokes
