How Should GBP Tap American Market With Khan?

Now I am sure you have heard that the ticket sales at the Mandalay Bay are not doing aswell as they would have done if the fight between Khan and Judah was in Atlantic city.

Come to Las Vegas, Gamble, Get drunk, Get Laid, See Khan fight at the Mandalay Bay/MGM Grand and spend your money! Viva Las Vegas courtesy of GBP!

That is what GBP is trying to build Khan into, A British boxer that fights and headlines the best venues in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay and MGM Grand. GBP does not want Khan to have random fights all over the US but base Khan out of Las Vegas where they will keep him headlining and try to tap the British holiday makers market. This long term approach will make more money for GBP and Khan in the long term than one random fight in Atlantic City.

Now GBP has chosen to base Khan out of Las Vegas in the US, Top Rank on the other hand would have had Khan fighting all over the US, Cowboys stadium Dallas, Yankee Stadium New York, MSG, Atlantic City, Staples center, and generally trying to showcase him all over the country, Which approach do you think is the better one?

Anyway all this talk of where fights should be is irrelevant for the most part, what is relevant is who wins and Judah we all know is very dangerous and we shouldn't be shocked if he can pull an upset.

    I disagree completely.

Isolating the superstar fighters to only Las Vegas is a huge mistake. They rely on Vegas to sell out the venue rather then gain exposure throughout the country. Sure, Mandalay Bay or MGM may sell out, but people still dont know who Amir Khan is.

If they have fights like this at MSG in NYC where Judah is from then the fight is actually a big deal in the city, rather then just being a footnote in Las Vegas. If fighters had a big fight in major cities all around the country it would increase the fighters exposure and lead to more oppurtunities rather then just selling out venues.

Promoters in boxing are much more content with following the usual formula that is safe and will make them money while not increasing the sports popularity. Yet if they were willing to take more risks and develop a fighters reputation and popularity sooner rather then later it would be a major boost for the sport.

The problem showcasing Khan all over the US is he could be on the bad end of controversial decisions and GBP will want to keep him winning. Also showing Khan at different locations would depend on his opponent ie Judah in AC or Guerrero in California, Its piggybacking off the Khan opponents as opposed to building Khan up in his own right.

Who are they building Khan up to in Vegas?

If Khan wants an American fan base hes going to have to piggy back off of other fighters to get his name out there unless he puts in some truly masterful performances that gives him exposure to American sports media. Because it is better for him to go into a city where at least one fighter is very populare (Judah in AC or NYC) rather then to a city where neither fighter is (Las Vegas).

Khan's fight against Paul Malignaggi in NYC has gained much more exposure for him then this fight with Zab.

The same way fighters of the past got built up. Let them fight old, fading stars who still have a big name. Fighting Barrera in England was an OK start, but he should try and get these fights in Vegas. I don't count Judah because he really doesn't have much of a fan base anymore.

I think GB needs to try and make JMM-Khan in Vegas for early next year.

I have to agree the Malignaggi fight did seem to break Khan into the market very well. How well received was the fight over in the US? Was it hyped up and promoted well in your opinion?

The New York/New Jersey Area has the largest concentration of Pakistani Americans in the U.S.A. There is also a huge ****** population in the East Coast. GBP should have billed him the INSPIRATIONAL HOPE of his community to develop a fan base. The ******s are dying for a non-********* hero ever since 9/11. Khan could have been "The One", that's how big his potential is. If GBP did its job then Khan should have fought Zab in Atlantic City.

Well as far as boxing goes and it being a non mega fight it was pretty well received. I mean at the media tours, press conference, weigh ins, and fight the atmosphere was much more electric then most boxing fights.
