Why is Roach keeping Chavez Jr away from Martinez if he isn't all that? Easy win for Chavez, right?Comment

Trainer Freddie Roach spoke with the Grand Rapids Press about one of his new boxers, undefeated middleweight contender Peter Quillin (24-0, 18KOs), who steps in the ring on the Amir Khan-Zab Judah undercard on July 23 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The current king of the middleweights is Sergio Martinez. Roach questions the impressive record of Martinez, and welcomes an immediate fight with Quillin. Martinez returns to action on October 1 against Darren Barker.

I think he's good, definitely the best MW and probably somewhere around 4th or 5th on my P4P list. (excluding Floyd)
His entire career is built upon his last 5 fights, in which he is 3-1-1. I'll admit that he should at the very least be 4-1-0 though, probably even 5-0-0, but whatever. Before that he didn't do ****.
Who did he fight in those few fights though? P. Will was highly overrated back then and not a very good fighter IMO. Cintron, blah. Sergei was the #8 LMW (The Ring) and had never fought at MW and although Pavlik was tough he was always limited.
Too me, those wins shouldn't make him #1-2 P4P. And fighting the likes of Darren Barker won't either.Last edited by Bring It On; 07-16-2011, 05:13 PM.Comment

Roach always speaks his mind but not impressed with Sergios boxing ability? That comes as a bit of a suprise. I thought Roach might think he was a tad overated though.Comment

I like Roach. Having said that he needs to think a bit about what he's saying before speaking and maybe preferably not say anything at all.
I realize these guys have to build up their fighters and sometimes that involves downgrading other fighters to create controversy/interest and a potential matchup. The problem is that often enough the same insults you spew aptly apply to one or more of your own fighters. But that's boxing I guess...Comment
