That's a ridiculous statement. HBO is a business first, second, and third. Not only did greenburg lose manny for one fight ( a fight that did a monster 1.3 million ), that's a huge loss in revenue alone. But the much bigger issue is now that showtime got a taste of the big bucks HBO is gonna have to do what they're doing right now, and that's engage in a bidding war with their main rival for every pac fight moving forward starting with jmm. The price is gonna keep going up and up. So instead of having the premier money maker in the sport under lock and key, they pissed off his promoter, let their opponent taste blood, and now they find themselves in a war they should have never been in. That's just the pac situation, there have been plenty of other instances of HBO screwing the pooch. How much money did they throw away on that "beast" berto again???

        A very good post.

HBO's matchmaking has hurt the sport.

Speaking of the Klitschkos, Greenburg wanted Wlad to fight Rahman, and they chose Kevin Johnson for Vitali.

Greenburg insisted Dzinziruk fight Martinez, the one fighter at 154 and 160 he would have absolutely no chance against.

Promoters and fighters should choose their own opponents, HBO should NOT be doing the deciding for them.

Well, Greenburgs idea was to match the best fighters against the best. No one in America really wants to see Dzinziruk versus anyone other than Martinez in that division due to the lack of talent. Now I completely stand by that notion that we don't need garbage fights and I applaud Greenburg for what he did with the Pacquaio/Mosley fight but he didn't stay consistent with that. Greenburg gave passes and tune ups to a lot of Haymon fighters and for that he should be fired. If you preach one thing, stick with it across the board.

That's very true. All they do is put fighters down. They take one they like, then praise him for the rest of the fight while throwing the other one under the bus. It frustrates me how can they put down fighters like that? In Showtime, they don't do that, and I hate Showtime outside of the Super 6. Showtime actually tries to comment on the fight instead of putting a fighter down for the whole fight.

Nah Mark, I got to disagree.

One of Greenbergs's jobs is to maintain the quality of HBO Boxing, of which it is supposed the premier network in the sport. Have you looked around lately? Showtime is exceeding HBO in terms of quality with a fraction of HBO's budget. HBO is paying guys like Berto and Paul Williams, who have absolutely zero drawing power, millions of dollars for NO PRACTICAL REASON. They're eating up a huge chunk of HBO's budget simply because they're managed by Al Haymon, who Greenberg has decided to appease.

HBO is completely biased in their boxing program these days, and you can obviously tell who the network wants to win most fights that they air. That is not how it should be done. Look at how Showtime has a 24/7 style show (FC 360) to promote the fights that actually are taking place on Showtime, not PPV. It's turned every single fighter in the Super Six (Outside of Green Haha ) into a star among American fans and has garnered huge interest in the SMW division. No hype, no sob stories, just the fighters themselves telling their stories.

There are so many things that ESPN2 and Showtime are doing better than HBO with a fraction of HBOs budget that it's embarrassing. They could be stacking BAD cards 3 fights deep all three being great match-ups if they weren't doing **** like playing Paul Williams a million bucks coming of a loss for a reason that is not related to ratings or ticket sales.
