We finally reached Aaron Davis today and he cleared a lot of the smoke that appeared around the judging of the Paul Williams-Erislandy Lara bout this past Saturday evening including whom it was that was seated next to Judge Hilton Whitaker II that evening.
“That was me, the good looking one in the blue shirt and suit” Davis informed us.
This is the total opposite of what eyewitnesses confirmed through photos sent to them via the internet.
Mr. Davis apologized that the SACB website opens up to boxrec.com which until Monday had Whitaker III as judging the bout.
With regard to the way Whitaker Jr. was holding what appears to be his scorecard all evening, Mr. Davis went on to inform me that
“Whitaker Jr. Uses a bout sheet to cover his official scorecard so no one can read it, so what in fact you see is the bout sheet covering the scorecard”
Davis also discussed with us the judging of the fight including the amount of even rounds that were scored.
“I am going to meet with the judges and discuss this bout with them and the judging, then we will see what comes about, there were to many even rounds to my liking. We will see what to results are of that meeting whether it may mean some suspensions or revocations, we shall see.”
Several of my friends inside of boxing have vouched for the integrity of the Whitakers, Jr. and Hilton Whitaker the third..
Seems hundreds of websites and reporters, including Boxrec.com got the name of the judge wrong which started this ball rolling, and eyewitness accounts extended what may prove to be an error.
It by no means changes the fact that this bout was judged incorrectly, that perhaps some poor judgment was used in the choice of judges, and that SACB needs to be responsible when allowing results to be posted from their site wrong.
So to sum this all up , we have Aaron Davis stating it was him at ringside, we have Whitaker III saying he was not the judge (as we know) and was not in Atlantic City at the time of bout, we have Luis DeCubas Jr. saying that he was, we have Davis stating that Whitaker II uses a bout sheet to cover judges score sheet while he is waving it around with promoter behind him (though we can’t tell what covers what),we have other reports saying Whitaker III was present, and we still have one of the worse judged fights in recorded history that continues to stink up the sport
To date nothing is being done to correct that fact, now if someone wants to come forward and say that the scores were a mistaken identity as well, that Lara won the fight, as we all know then even better…
