  • Lennox Lewis: One of the Greatest Heavyweights?

    http://www.lennoxlewis.com/lennox/

Is Lennox 'The Lion' Lewis one of the greatest Heavyweights of his era?

Lennox Lewis has a very good resume:

    Gary Mason:

Lennox Lewis beat the Undefeated Gary Mason in Round 7 via TKO, Mason has only 1 Loss in his career which was to Lewis, His current Record is 37-1 (34 Knockouts). (He Knocked out Tyrell Biggs & James Pritchard)

    Glen McCrory:

Lennox Lewis Knocked Out the Former IBF Cruiserweight Champion/
Commonwealth Champion in Round 2 of the Scheduled 12 Rounds.

    Tyrell Biggs:

Lewis Knocked out the Olympics Gold Medalist 3 times in Round 3 which was forced to an automatic stoppage. (Tyson done it in Round 7)

    Donovan Ruddock:

It took only 2 Rounds for Lennox Lewis to Win the Commonwealth
Title and Eliminator to the WBC Heavyweight Title, He floored Ruddock in Round 1 and then Twice in Round 2. (Lewis became WBC Champ after this fight Because Bowe refused to fight him.)

    Tony Tucker:

TNT Had a very good chin, but it was exposed to Lewis, when he knocked him out in the 3rd and 9th round, however TNT got up on his feet and showed his heart, his courage, and Lewis won a Decision and made his first defence of the WBC Title.

    Frank Bruno:

This was one of my favourite fights, Lewis beat Bruno down with a 7th Round TKO, Bruno who was warned for Holding and hitting, could'nt do anything after the 6th Round, he was tired and having rough night.

    Tommy Morrison:

The former WBO Champion Morrison who beat Foreman and Ruddock, (Out of Primes) was fighting for the IBC Title, and Lennox gave him (What I would call a) one sided ass whooping until referee
Mills Lane stopped the bout 1:22 seconds of the 6th Round.

    Ray Mercer:

Mercer was known for his Chin, No one could Knockout a Prime Mercer, the former WBO Heavyweight Champ, Probably not even a Prime Tyson, Lennox Lewis won a Majority decision against a Prime Mercer Which was deserving but not satisfying, (Some people say Controversial) but Lewis still had a win at the end of the day in his resume, and i had him 1 round ahead, it was a confusion like Hopkins/Taylor with half believing Lewis won and half believing Mercer, I would call it as a draw, but in the books Lennox won.

    Oliver McCall:

After his Shocking Loss to McCall, Lewis showed Heart, He wanted a rematch and revenge! to Prove he is capable of beating any fighter of his era and he did prove it after Knocking out the hard chin Oliver McCall in the 5th Round.

    Henry Akinwande:

I was'nt Impressed by this fight because Lewis was winning but Henry kept holding and hitting and he was warned many times, he was a undefeated fighter at that time he lost via Disqualification but Lewis was ahead in the fight as judges scored it 40-35 at the time of the Disqualification. (Reminds me of Tyson biting Holyfields ear after he knew he was losing)

    Andrew Golota:

At this time Golota was a fierce fighter, after Brain damaging
Rid**** Bowe, beating the living hell out of him twice and he took a fight with Lennox Lewis, which he lost by a 1st Round Knockout, The fight finished early as Golota was unable to beat the count.

    Shannon Briggs:

Highrated Contender Shannon "The Cannon" Briggs lost to Lewis via
a 5th round TKO, because he was knocked out 3 times in the 5th, which forced it to be an Automatic stoppage, Shannon Improved after he fought Lewis, and is currently a Contender, after having 10 victories straight all of them by knockouts.

    Evander Holyfield 1 & 2:

The first fight was a controversial decision, because Lewis had won the fight but the judges scored it as a draw, Holyfield was doing better in the opening rounds, but he gassed out, he tried to Knock Lewis out but he could'nt, and later on lewis took the rounds and won a close fight but it was called a draw, However in the second fight Lennox Lewis won a Unanimous Decision over Holyfield.

    Michael Grant:

This guy was Undefeated, and the media started giving him a lot of attention after he beat legit contenders and everyone started
talking about how good he is, until Lewis Knocked him out 2 times
in the Opening round and once in the Second round and he couldnt
beat the count, he got exposed against Lewis.

    Francois Botha:

Highrated South African Contender, lost to Lennox Lewis in the Second Round of the fight. (He also had 2 controversial draws with Briggs and Etienne)

    David Tua:

Has never been knocked down in his career, This Samoa Boxer has a
damn hard chin, and knocked out some of the best Contenders/ Ex
Champions. (Rahman, Ruiz & Maskaev)..But lost to Lewis by a
Decision (119-109,118-110,117-111), Lewis gave Tua his best shots
but Tua can take the best shots from anyone and still put up a good fight.

    Hasim Rahman:

After the big Upset by Hasim Rahman, Rahman gave Lewis a rematch, and Lewis had to Prove this time his Lucky Punch wont work, and he was Lucky that it worked last time, Lewis Knocked Rahman Out in the 4th Round (1 Round Earlier than Rahman)

    Mike Tyson:

This was the Match everyone was waiting for and it happened, Tyson was a feared fighter, but Lennox Lewis was a brave fighter, He Knocked Mike Tyson out in the 8th Round of the fight, To gain Respect of many fans.

    Vitali Klitschko:

This was Lennox's last fight, He stopped Vitali Klitschko with an
Uppercut, that caused Klitschko a deep cut and the ringside
physician stopped the fight, which Lewis won by TKO in the 6th.

I think overall he has a very good resume and destroyed the good
fighters of his era, Only 2 Losses and he gained revenge on both
    of them and won both.

Lewis has a Record of 41-2 (32 Knockouts) and is Rated the Best
British Heavyweight on the Record Books and Websites

He has only 2 losses from Hasim Rahman and Oliver McCall
which he got revenge on both with stunning knockouts.

I personally think he is the greatest heavyweight hes fought the
greatest fighters and hes beat the greatest fighters.

He's probably not the greatest but he definitely belong among the greatest.

He dominated his division on his own era and that alone should qualify him to be among the greats.

Not in Ali's class of the greatest, but he's definatly a top ten all time Heavyweight.

He didn't go toe to toe with Tua, he just outboxed him, the only guy to go toe to toe with Tua and be succesful is Ike Ibeabuchi.
But yes i think he's one of the greatest.

He beat the former baddest man on the planet Mike Tyson
                He survived Evander Holyfield
He beat the current heavyweight knockout champ Vitali Klitschko
He went toe-2-toe and won a decision from David Tua
He knocked out Andrew Golota in the first round
He got his revenge and knocked out Hasim Rahman
He faced one of the most dangerous fighters Donovon Ruddock

He has only 2 losses from Hasim Rahman and Oliver McCall
which he got revenge on both with stunning knockouts.

Is he the best heavyweight of his era or is he overrated?

I personally think he is the greatest heavyweight hes fought the
greatest fighters and hes beat the greatest fighters.
the baddest man on the planet was as dangerous and aggressive as a down pillow.
evander was past his prime when he fought lewis.
he barely squeaked by klitschko and refused to give vitali a rematch.
tua was out of shape in his fight with lewis and almost KOd lewis a few times.
he KOd golota in the 1st round, so what? so did brewster. the fact that golota was favored in the fight doesnt mean anything.
he KOd rahman in the rematch, so what? rahman sux and vitali will prove that in november.
razor ruddock was FAR past his prime when he fought lewis and he never was really as dangerous as you say he was.
yes, he beat the men who beat him but his TKO over mccall was anything but stunning.

i personally think yes and no.
yes, he was the best of his era. no, this era is one of the worst for the HW division.

is he overrated? yes, i think so, to a certain degree.
is he the greatest HW? HELL NO.
is he the best HW? HELL NO.
is he one of the best HWs? yes.
is he one of the greatest HWs? sort of. he was good. he was great in the ring, but his fight dodging and money grubbing and his inactivity says he wasnt really great.

in conclusion: lewis is one of the best HWs, but he shouldnt be put in the Top 10 HWs of all time. he was the best in his day and being the best in ur era is noteworthy enough, even if ur era isnt noteworthy itself.

                  A) You say that like it was a mistake

                  B) I don't think getting hit with a compubox record amount of shots from Tua and winning by one round is as "successful" as shutting him out and not letting him hit you.

                  That's some bizzare logic bro.

                    Predictions:

If The Pugilist Specialist was still fighting what do you think the fight prediction against the following opponents would be:

                    Lennox Lewis vs Wladimir Klitschko
                    (Lewis KO 5)

Lennox Lewis vs Roy Jones Jr
                    (Lewis KO 12)

                    Lennox Lewis vs James Toney
                    (Lewis UD)

                    Lennox Lewis vs John Ruiz
                    (Lewis KO 2)

                    Lennox Lewis vs Larry Holmes
                    (Lewis UD)
