Cooney had bad luck in that he primed during the great Larry Holmes's prime. And of course, Vitali also had bad luck having had to fight the sickeningly overrated Lennox Lewis who was also slow but not as slow and very clumsy but not as clumsy as the Frankenstein Brothers Klitschko.

Cooney would no doubt have been champ today with the Klitschko's serving as his sparring partners.

lol cooney was a solid boxer and all, but he doesn't possess the athleticism and raw destructive power of the klitschko's. he is comparable to tony thompson, IMO.

On one hand Cooney probably got a little underrated after the Holmes fight. And I could see him landing a nasty hook on Wlad (the proverbial "puncher's chance," i.e., not much of a chance), but I don't think he'd be quick enough with his hands or feet to beat either Klit.

Hmmmm...Gerry is white bruh.

Anyway, all because Gerry Cooney was hyped up to be the great white hope, doesn't mean he had the skills to back up the hype. He was very carefully matched and his best wins were a past prime Ken Norton and Ron Lyle...Both of the Klitschkos would beat him. He was EXTREMELY overhyped. Don't get me wrong, I like Cooney. I like that he was a big puncher and he had a great personality, but his defense was pitiful. Especially up the middle. Not only that, but he was slow and sloppy against guys who tend to move. If Vitali stood right in front of him, I'd give Cooney a decent chance, but like I said he has horrible defense. He does have a hell of a chin though and alot of heart.
