Wlad said that Haye fought a defensive fight, but there are two sides to that. Wlad's entire style is really based around keeping the other guy at a distance. It's defensive fighting on the front foot - press forward jabbing the other guy backwards, but hold back on stepping in with the right. If he executes it properly then he'll always win the fight because he'll take rounds off the jab and the other guy can't get close enough to ever do any damage.
I mean the idea that Haye wanted to fight a defensive fight doesn't make much sense. He wanted Wlad to come after him and he wanted to be able to get in close (those were the only ways he could win) but he just couldn't do it and Wlad is too disciplined to deviate from his game plan. He certainly didn't let Wlad hit him with power shots, but what's he supposed to do? Stand there and let himself get knocked out? Haye tried to jump in on him several times and it mostly just resulted in him falling over because Wlad is too good at stepping back and keeping the other guy at range.
It was basically two fighters who could almost completely nullify the other guy's attacks. In that situation it's the guy who can jab the other guy that wins, but let's not pretend it was any more dominant or offensive than that.
