  • Comments Thread For: Klitschko vs Haye: The Pre-Unification Report Card

by Cliff Rold - Forget the belts.

The Heavyweight Championship of the World, the real one, the one that matters, belongs to one man. That man enters this Saturday’s massive title fight at the Imtech Arena in Hamburg, Germany, on the best run of his career. He has won 13 in a row, ten of them title fights, partially unified the class, picked up the Ring Magazine belt, and still the question remains:

    Who is Wladimir Klitschko?

Until he is deposed, he remains the center of the story. His reign grows longer in years and fights and there are those beginning to wonder where he might shake out in the grad scheme of fistic history. Is he the fighter many in the boxing world still think can’t fight from the bottom? Or is he, given the experience of the first Peter fight and the momentum gathered in the run since, a matured, battle tested veteran ready to have his signature moment with a heated rival?

But is the rival really good enough in the ring to ask the question? After all, it is just as fair to ask:

    Who is David Haye?

Emanuel Steward: What I like about David (Haye) is he comes with the winning mindset. Not like a lot of the opponents we have fought recently. We go back to the first Sam Peter fight, he was a tough guy. He came to win. And maybe one or two since then. But no one came in since Sam Peter with the mindset of David.

Roldie come along now, no way Wladimir loses this fight. Haye has no idea exactly how hard wladimir's jab is, and how much it hurts to get hit with it. Once he feels that jab, he will stop trying to "win", and like many other klitschko foes, he will go in "stay alive" mode where he simply will use his energy to NOT get knocked out.

Haye doesn't want to embarrass himself even more by getting KO'd after the **** talkage, so he will ensure Wladimir wins another boring decision so at least he has an excuse of some sort.

I have Wladimir winning the fight either based on physical difference between the two fighters. That long jab would be hard for Haye to hurdle. Add the fact that I dont think that Haye's chin could standup to Wlad's punches. He is been decked by lesser fighters in the past. Haye maybe fast and slick, but all Wlad need is one solid punch to turn the tides in his favor. But this will definitely be a great fight. But I am going for Wlad on this one by KO.

Wlad should get power A+, while Haye should get a B+ ... Wlad's defence B+? The guy has been barely hit in the past years and has the best jab in boxing.

roldie is a good writer; i enjoy his "pre-fight report cards" and rankings. seems to actually be in touch with your hardcore fan base too, unlike many writers.

roldie wladimir does deserve an A+ for power, though! I agree with your B+ assessment of his defense; like sergio martinez, Wladimir doesn't really have a "great defense", PER SE, however, he uses his legs and jab to keep distance, thereby avoiding damage.

Breaking down "defense" real quick, Ive noticed there are three main types of "defensive fighters" - the shell fighter, who relies on a strong guard. i.e. Clottey, Abraham are masters of this. They get hit a lot, but are able to absorb most of the impact. Then you have your slicksters who employ head and upper body movement. Masters of this are Pep, Pea, Mayweather. These guys don't get hit very often. Finally, you have you "movers" like Sergio Martinez who simply takes advantage of length, and foot speed and stamina. Froch is starting to become pretty good at this too. Klitschko would fall under this category. I would say that David Haye falls under this category too - he uses his foot speed to keep distance.

basically every boxers form of "defense" can be found in those three classifications, or some combination thereof. Very, very rarely will a boxer be proficient in ALL three of those categories.

Sugar Ray Robinson was pretty close - that's why he is the GOAT, perfectly balanced in every aspect.

Andre Dirrell is a good combination of a slickster and a mover.

Cotto is pretty well balanced, but isn't really a "master" of any of the three.

pacquiao has a pretty strong shell defense these days. . .

this fight will be boring. both will try to stay at the distance. esp. haye. i think when he eats a few jabs he's just gonna start to run. in order to gas wlad haye would have to pressure him actively for several rounds.

I agree. It's gonna be boring as hell. Hopefully we're both wrong and this ends up being a good scrap. I already put a bet on Wlad by decision at +400...I suggest other people put some money up too. Chances are it will go to decision and Wlad will walk out with the win.
