IRS approves Public Charity status for the Manny Pacquiao Foundation

    02 Jul 2011

US-based public charity to support Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao’s fight against poverty.

Los Angeles, CA— Perhaps no other living person embodies raw physical power and sophisticated diplomacy inside and outside the boxing ring as well as Mr. Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao. The “Pacman” is the pound-for-pound best boxer in the world with an unprecedented eight world titles in eight different weight divisions. When Mr. Pacquiao is not delivering power-packed punches in the ring, he is the Honorable Emmanuel D. Pacquiao, a public servant representing the legislative district of Sarangani in the Philippine House of Representatives. He is the “fighting congressman from Sarangani” who uses intellect, persuasion and charisma to forge alliances and create laws which will change the future of the 12th most populous country in the world.

Mr. Pacquiao is more than a boxer and a politician. He is a compassionate individual who has contributed his personal resources and celebrity to improve the lives of the Filipino people. If he had more time and money, Manny Pacquiao would, without a doubt, help more people. However, since 2008 a few private individuals and businesses have exploited Mr. Pacquiao’s name to solicit donations from local Fil-Am communities. Negative press and misdirected lawsuits resulted against the beloved boxer. But Manny Pacquiao kept his cool throughout these episodes. He waited. And thankfully, his patience was rewarded.

On June 23, 2011, The Manny Pacquiao Foundation was officially approved by the United States Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and designated as a public charity. Donations to the Foundation are tax deductible. The Foundation is organized and operated exclusively to foster, support and transform the health, education and overall social well-being of disadvantaged communities in the Philippines and other countries. Manny Pacquiao is the Chairman of the Board leading a team of accomplished professionals in the medical, educational, arts and nonprofit sectors with untarnished reputations and volunteer experience under their belts. With his charitable arm up and running with projects slated to launch as early as August 2011, Mr. Pacquiao will likely add one more title under his belt, “World Champion Boxer. Politician. Humanitarian.”

The Foundation has existed since December 8, 2008 as California nonprofit public benefit corporation. However, its first set of board members and officers deemed it better to receive donations as a donor advised fund under Give2Asia (a public charity based in San Francisco) until the Foundation’s tax-exempt was obtained from the IRS. The Foundation did not initiate or undertake any major fundraising projects or charitable activities while the IRS reviewed its application. Almost 18 months of correspondence with the IRS (during which time Manny Pacquiao was elected to the Philippine Congress) resulted in the Foundation amending its bylaws, altering the board structure and streamlining its fundraising campaign plan to establish that it would not be organized or operated solely for private interests. Indeed, the Foundation grants, scholarships and fellowships are specifically off limits to relatives and members of the Foundation’s grant selection committee, officers, directors and substantial contributors.

The Foundation plans to launch a 2-year fundraising campaign to support individuals and organizations engaged in charitable work in the Philippines focusing on health care, education and sports. When asked about what’s in store for the Foundation, Milania dela Cruz, its President, stated, “We hope that Manny Pacquiao fans and supporters worldwide will welcome the real Manny Pacquiao Foundation. We will raise more funds and give more resources to help as many Filipinos fight hunger, disease and illiteracy. Charitable work is closest to Manny’s heart. Please, come join us.”

The Foundation’s official website will be launched mid-July 2011. For additional information on the Foundation or donation inquiries, please contact Marsha-laine F. Dungog, Esq. at 213-235-9193 or email: mdungog@hobsondungog.com. Hobson Dungog Bernardino + Davis LLP is U.S. legal counsel to Mr. Pacquiao and general counsel to The Manny Pacquiao Foundation.

Usa and other countries have so many loopholes that rich people make fake ass charities to launder money and get huge tax deductions.

All rich people do this, why do you think 100% of millionaires/billionaires donate huge sums of money to charity? Its not because they care about the charity, its because they write all that off and get a huge kickback and will get alot more money than declaring that cash and paying the tax on it.

        why all the negativity bro?

ASSUMING its true, and Manny uses this charity to launder money, at the very least, he's helping people in the process.

there are several means of laundering money, and i believe charities are the best way to do it. IF he's gonna launder money anyway, might as well help some needy people in the process.

And what if he really wants to help, nothing more? This is like the steroids accusations. People who thinks automatically negative will attract all negatives and ill-will in return. They become magnets for tradegies and bad karma.

We have to accept that the world is negative by default, and it is our duty to think positively to make it better for a start.

          The benefit of the doubt.

Or The One who actually knows the truth and the True Judge, may prove all bad thinkers wrong may be in for a good spanking.

Im a Manny fan btw, but I can see past all this stuff.

Do you know why hes doing it in the USA? Because he is fighting in the USA, he pays a ****LOAD OF $$$$$ IN TAXES. He would like to get some of that back.

Im not saying its bad, I would do the same thing and everyone else is doing it.

Im just not big on all this charity business especially when people are bragging about it.

If you want to set it up and help people out than thats fine, just when I see words like IRS approves that 100% means tax breaks. If he wanted to help people he didnt need to make a 100% Public Charity which DOESNT PAY TAXES AND YOU COULD HIRE A BUNCH OF PEOPLE AND PAY THEM WITHOUT DOUBLE DIPPING THE TAX.

This is why most athletes have their own charities

70% of Nba players that make millions have their own charities.
                Golf Stars
                Hockey Players
                Football players
                Boxers (Floyd,Manny,Bhop,Countless other boxers)

Its not because they like helping people, its because of the tax breaks you get from it.

You know who really helps? Those millionaires/billionaires who do it Anonymously and help without bringing the media into it.

Well, that makes sense but I doubt Pac doing it for himself. Pac even before he was elected as congressman in his country has been helping a lot of people from his own pocket. He sent hundreds of poor children to school from his own money, etc..

i believe that the most likely scenario is that Manny is doing BOTH.

Manny is the type of guy who willingly forks over cash to help a person in need on the spot. However, he's also a businessman and can recognize a money-saving strategy and is wise enough to put it to use.

He already is among the top 5 taxpayers in the philippines, has ALWAYS paid his tax dues whenever he fights in the U.S, helps las vegas and other venues ENORMOUSLY whenever he fights by bringing in much needed revenue and most likely helped countless others in the US as well.

At least Pac actually pays taxes unlike General Electric which paid ZERO TAXES in spite of earning BILLIONS.

Its good to pay taxes, its WISE to use your resources available to pay the minimum via tax avoidance. (not tax EVASION)
