Comments Thread For: Wladimir-Haye: Good vs. Bad or Bad Guy vs. Bad Guy?

Bernd Boente’s claim that “We had [British] people shaking Wladimir’s hand and telling him to knock Haye out because they do not like him” has led to a bit of fight week soul searching amongst British boxing fans looking forward to this Saturday’s Wladimir Klitschko versus David Haye WBO, IBF, IBO and WBA heavyweight unification bonanza at the Imtech Arena, Hamburg. Boente’s communiqué the latest in a long line of claim and counter claim ahead of the biggest heavyweight contest since Lennox Lewis met Mike Tyson in 2002. [Click Here To Read More]

To be honest, I thought it was a badly written article.

There's no doubt but that that blasted Haye has been the instigator, perpetrator and evil genius behind a slew of the most malevolent, idiotic, and poorly written articles it has ever been my misfortune to come across, at least a dozen or more each forsaken day. This Dooley drooley is only the latest. I'm presently reading one of Conan Doyle's lesser known works, and the HUGE difference between it's quality and this DREK is beyond description. Even though it'was written well over a hundred years ago.

Gave up reading after the first paragraph or whatever. Too many generalisations and bad stereotyping.

People are excited for the fight - end of! Haye and Wlad have polarised opinions on this one and I cannot wait!

Wlad by late KO - though I wont be surprised if it goes either way

Thanks for the reads and comments guys. I guess I misjudged the pre-fight mood a little as it was intended as a knockabout piece pointing out that this isn’t a fight that can be painted in absolute terms. Both guys have their good and bad points.

It is an exciting event but I still fear for the division. The two brothers have dominated for such a long time, they have taken on guys who have generated a bit of a buzz before only to dismantle them with relative ease. Should this be the case on Saturday we will go back to the two big guys churning out competent defences and they are both a little creaky so are likely to retire.

I never thought it would get to this but we may have to can the long held idea that the HW division is the icing on the cake of any good boxing era. The current top ten makes for grim reading and with Wlad, Vitali and Haye close to retirement we face the possibility of watching competent guys pick up the vacant titles when these three are gone. Hardly inspiring stuff.

My tape recorder is on the mend so I think I’ll stick to interviews in future and let someone else talk a bit of bollocks! Enjoy the fight & the weekend.

Nice post, thought provoking stuff, makes me wonder which is the greater evil -- badly written articles or terrible posts? ;0) It was all very elementary school, my dear Eddie (I know, I know, Holmes never uttered this phrase to Watson).

Fair enough Neckodeemus - I should have perhaps read all of it before passing judgement. Apologies.

Anyway who you got taking this?

Wotcha pal. My fault, probably should made myself clearer and explained that this week's talk, British fans turning on Haye, does not really compute as he's acting no differently than he usually acts.

You probably saved yourself some valuable time, though!

I think Haye can do it but he needs to box as well as he did against Mormeck. Haye's technique has gone backwards in my opinion. Look at his body punching in the JMM fight compared to recent outings.

Sure, Ruiz looks a good result but he hammered him down with a straight 1-2 in the opener and then started lopping his shots, he looked a mess at times to be honest.

Haye-Harrison was similar, he took the finish but looked incredibly messy and a long way off the Valuev performance, which wasn't amazing but was effective and showed skill despite what one or two say about the 'running'.

We saw the same thing with Lennox after he spanked Razor Ruddock, his technique started to unravel, he placed too much emphasis on power and suffered as a result. I hope the same does not happen to Haye. Lewis adapted and corrected his mistakes and well he could, he was far better a fighter than David.

If Haye can solve the problem of Wlad's jab then he has a chance. He also needs to work the body in my opinion, although Adam Booth differed in our recent interview, to lower the guard and take the pep from Wlad's underrated movement and punches.

Haye basically needs to fight the fight of his life to win, if he doesn't then Wlad can just do what he always does and will get the win.

Long-term, I think a win for Haye makes things interesting for the rest of the year, the division will be a mess again in 2012 so it would be nice to go Wlad-Haye to Vitali-Haye and at least have a temporary kingpin.

I imagine the brothers will carry on through 2012, maybe retire at the end of that year and then leave a huge vacuum in their wake. They are quite predictable but are relatively busy, or were until recent times, and bring a touch of class to the division.

Post-2012 we may be in the situation we were in during the 1980s and periods in the 1990s where the sport relies on the lower weights. Don King built up Chavez in response to a dire division and his concentration on lower weight challenges led to some great times. It is a pity that current promoters such as Golden Boy lack the verve and imagination of King. Best thing for the sport would be to knock 20 years from Don's age.

Anyway, bit of a rant there. Hope you enjoy the fight

PS You must be a Stoke fan? They're doing well at the minute!

Boxing aside, I can't allow such coincidences to pass without comment. You are correct, "Elementary my Dear Watson " was never uttered. But the components were both mentioned in a story centred about an Irish regiment (of the Queen) called "The Royal Mallows, supposedly quartered in Fermoy Co. Wexford, although Mallow itself, a small town, is is Cork County. By another coincidence I was born, bred and grew up in Dublin, a shortish drive away. And a third coincidence, my Dear Late Mother was a Cork girl.

The co-incidence I've mentioned above, is that the obscure, long forgotten Doyle story I'm reading is a collection of short stories in which the Royal Mallows play a major part, in fact headed by a yarn about a sort of insurrection in the Mallows whilst in the thick of a death struggle against Arab and Omdurman Dervishes.

With all the coincidences.....where's the betting shop??
