It was exactly 23 years ago today, on a Monday night, that then, 22 year old unbeaten Mike Tyson, and unbeaten Michael Spinks fought in Atlantic City in a SuperFight billed "Once And For All", to see who the real Heavyweight Champion of the world is.
Many people thought it was Tyson, cause he had all the belts, and was the Unified Heavyweight champion.
Others thought Spinks was the true Heavyweight Champ, cause he was the lineal champion, cause Spinks beat the man (Holmes) that beat the man (Ali), that had beaten the man (Leon Spinks), and so forth,,,, that had the World Heavyweight title.
I remember Ceasar's Palace and Las Vegas Hilton had bidded for the fight, and out of nowhere, Donald Trump "puts" $10 Million "on the table" to host the fight in his backyard (Atlantic City), and "steals" it from Las Vegas.
Tyson punched a hole in the wall in the dressing room, cause Spinks' promoter-Butch Lewis had tried to play mind games on Tyson, whom was having many personal distractions weeks before the fight.
Tyson got paid $22 Million for 91 second 1st round KO,
and Spinks got $13.5 Million.
The "anticipation/electricity" in that arena was amazing.
(I saw it on TV)
Those were good memories.
