Matthysse with less polished skills landed the more effective punches. DA was back pedaling the entire night trying to shoe shine his way to a W and missed a lot of punches. He got KD on the 4th and Matthysse closed strong at the 12th. Don't be fooled by all that grunting DA does it doesn't mean he is doing anything of note. Matthyse won that fight close at worst it was a draw but with that KD in the 4th and Matthyse closing the show there is no way DA deserves the nod in this fight.

Devon Alexander won the fight, and is 1.2 million dollars richer. I know a lot of those on this site hating on him must have ****ty lives, and it's ok because your not getting punched in your face for money. One point loses are not robberies, and I did have Matthysse winning the fight. There is a such thing as closing the show in this sport, and unless Matthysse learns how to do this at the elite level then he's no better than his brother. Another Matthysse hype job with a high KO ratio, against inferior opponents.

A couple of things:
Devon Alexander is not a bum. He can box, but his performances are NOT his fault.
The truth is ... Devon Alexander has no business fighting championship quality opponents at this point in his career. The guy is clearly green and still needs to be brought along slowly.
Why you ask?
Well the answer, in a name, is Urango.
Devon ended that ONE fight in such spectacular fashion that the bar got accidentally raised at that point in his career. And not just from his fans. Pundits and boxers alike were singing this kid's praises like Jesus just came back.
And if you watch the knockout of Urango, it was one of the most impressive and more importantly most seemingly-calculated knockouts in recent years. My opinion?
Devon got lucky. Now hear me out.
Before that KO it was more like "Devon who?", but afterwards he instantly became the number one challenger for Bradley who completely overwhelmed the kid. Right before the Bradley fight Devon had looked suspect against Kotelnik. He surprisingly looked stiff and out of place ... relying on a misplaced jab that constantly seemed to miss its mark. It was in that fight that my doubts about how well Devon would fair against Bradley grew.
Devon is a young kid who shocked the world with his masterful KO of Urango, and ever since then the world has been waiting for a repeat performance. After all, Mayweather and Pacquiao both repeat their performances. As does Bradley. As does Ward. As does Donaire. As does Marquez.
But the repeat never came as the world waited. Devon Alexander doesn't suck. The poor kid is just in over his freaking head. I'm sure that it doesn't help that he probably has an entourage that has pushed him into capitalizing on the opportunity that his KO of Urango opened up. I'm sure Devon doesn't want to let those who he feels are counting on him down, but deep down I'm confident that he knows that he's in over his head.
Devon doesn't fight like a confident fighter. He doesn't impose any particular strategy or attribute(speed, power, toughness) in his fights. He almost seems to come into the fight in survival mode before the first punch is thrown.
While I don't think Devon sucks, I DO believe that he is being ruined by his decisions. He is losing confidence with each performance. Struggling against Kotelnik and Matthysse can't be boosting his faith in his ability to any degree.
If his team cares about him, they need to do what Zab Judah did:
They need to step back, reassess their situation, and start over with a new plan ... slowly bring Devon back up against club fighters to not only get some real ring time with guys he can handle, but to also help him remember what it feels like to be able to impose his skills on an opponent.
Judah went as far as to fight as frequently as every 2 months just to get that feeling back. I think it would do well for Devon to step back and do the same if he wants longevity in this sport.
At this point, he doesn't have star quality, and he isn't boxing like a champion. Soon he won't be able to sell tickets unless he's fighting in St Louis.
There is nothing wrong with reinventing one's self. I would love to say that Devon is going through a rough patch, but that's simply not the case. After Urango, Devon has had 3 separate opportunities to get his **** together and make his case for being counted among the division's best. Yet in all 3 outings .. even in the ones that he won ... he's made his case much weaker.
I know Devon can box. I've seen it and I've seen him do well against quality but not top opposition. I just don't think that his Team has a solid plan for moving him up. So they just threw him in with the lions of the division and crossed their fingers.
Good luck, Devon. And remember that its you in the ring taking those punches and no one else but you. Don't let friendships and the obligations that come with them get you ****ed up in the ring, dude. Don't be afraid to change trainers, handlers, managers, etc. Shake things up.
You can do what you have to do and STILL be loyal.Last edited by Brother Jay; 06-27-2011, 12:06 AM.
