A lot of people from Mexico really disliked Oscar, so I would expect him to surpass him in Mexican popularity. I'm sure he'll become a big draw with Mexican-Americans, but he won't have the cross-over star success that de la Hoya had. So I don't think he'll be the next Oscar.
Is Saul Alvarez the next Oscar?

He will not be the next Oscar De La Hoya, but he can be the next Saul Canelo Alvarez. And in the future, people will be asking if a certain Mexican fighter can be the next Saul Alvarez.
The next Oscar De La Hoya was supposed to be Victor Ortiz.
Don't forget De La Hoya had a perfect record for a while, not draws, no defeats, no DQ's, Olympic gold medalist, spoke English perfectly, big draw in the U.S.
Saul Alvarez has 1 draw, doesn't have a gold medal, and doesn't speak English. But he's a big draw in Mexico at least.
Victor Ortiz has 2 losses, 1 TKO loss the other one a DQ, doesn't have a gold medal, speaks English perfectly, is an okay draw in the U.S., is somewhat seen as a quitter by some fans, while Oscar never quit in his prime.
Gold medals don't make the fighter, but it does help to sell you, an undefeated/perfect record helps to sell you, speaking perfect English helps for the media. With that said Canelo and Ortiz both have crowd pleasing styles, more so Ortiz, and be good or great fighters in their own way. Off topic: It's not like Broner who really does look like the next Floyd: Starting at 130 with really good power, even has the controversial win over a Mexican, but unlike Floyd he has not avenged that controversial fight and Floyd started off humble and only became a big mouth after he had proved himself for a while.Comment
