    Boxing: The Inner Game

Most of the discussions here focus on fighters and match-ups. I'd like to start a thread where the topic is about the inner workings of the sport -- the stuff the promoters, managers, fighters and agents only get to see. A lot goes on behind the scenes, much of it quite shady. Does anyone here have real-world experience they can share? I'd like to stick to the pro game, but any amateur anecdotes are welcome.

To start off, I'd like to mention something I read on another forum. A poster remarked that a typical night's pay for a club fighter is about $100 per round. He specified that the bigger the show, the bigger the pay (obvious), and that the headliner would get paid the most (again, obvious).

Based on this limited information, I would imagine that an average fighter's night might go something like this: six rounds (average length) = $600; manager gets paid 30% = $180; cut-man, handlers, etc. might get paid 10% (?) total = $60. At this point, our hero is down to $360...and he still hasn't paid tribute to "Uncle Sam"!

Let's assume that our hypothetical fighter falls into the 15% tax bracket (U.S.), he would (if he pays his taxes) take another $90 hit. That brings him down to $270. Since most guys fight very infrequently, it's safe to say that precious few are quitting their day job.

I'm certain that I'm missing something, but I'll leave that to the members who have some actual, behind-the-scenes knowledge of professional boxing. Please, I welcome your input....
