Comments Thread For: "Fighting Words" - Networks Should Invest More in 'Now'

by David P. Greisman - In one way, investing in a boxer is like investing in a retirement fund, putting money in on potential, on the promise of a worthwhile payout that will not be seen until much later.

In another way, investing in a boxer is like investing in a business, a premise with a historically high probability of failure, of not being worth it in the long run – but a premise that still lures in the dreamers (and the suckers) with the occasionally phenomenal jackpot.

The overly optimistic would point out that for every Francisco Bojado and Ricardo Williams Jr. who fails to meet expectations, there is a Miguel Cotto and an Oscar De La Hoya who not only meets, but exceeds them.

The overly optimistic would be wrong. There are more cautionary tales than there are success stories.

Not every investment in a boxer will be a winner. That doesn’t keep the investors – in particular, his promoter – from raking in the winnings.

The sporting world is one of revolving doors, future stars appearing, then ascending, and finally reigning before retiring, all as their eventual replacements follow farther back in the cycle. That means that while promoters are looking for more cash cows, they are able to farm them out to networks looking to sell subscribers on the next superstars. [Click Here To Read More]

Great article. To the writer, you gave Harold Lederman a great review and I am there with you. I hope to see Harold do more commentating and analyst. He was straightforward but charming all at the same time. I like his trademark voice "Ok, Jim" or "I have it as...." He is very memorable and he certainly adds color to the commentary.

I hope Lederman sees this message to him which is "great work and hope to hear from him more."

Some fights never live up to the hype. Can you imagine if we waited another two years for Groves vs De Gale? We would have waited for what turned out to be a boring and uninspiring fight.

Sometimes it's better to capitalise on the hype straight away.

I also find it amussing that Williams and Peterson still believe it was a" lucky punch" after getting tagged with it for the better part of fourteen rounds. Idiots!!!! This is why I believed after the first fight, as do most after the KO, that Willaims should part from Peterson. He has become stagnent under his guidence and nothing proves this more than the fact that they still believe it was a "lucky punch".

This thing between HBO vs SHOWTIME is going to get hotter. The last couple of years Showtime has put on better fights the fights that the hardcore boxing fans want to watch like the 168 and the 118 fighters going at it .Hbo has over paid their fighters like Berto,Alexander, and Bradley but want to treat Sergio Martinez like crap .When you watch a fight on showtime you don't know who's going to win unlike Hbo who you already know who's is going to win Bob Arum is doing a good job by putting good cards with showtime Golden Boy needs to do the same because Gary Shaw and Lou and Dan Gossen let Hbo run them.
