  • Jones and Tarver Post Fight Comments

“I was hard to go out like I would have being knocked out twice the last couple of times. I’m a true champion. I’ve been at the top. Being the champion that I am, it was good. I was satisfied with my performance, but I do realize that I lost the fight. I’m not the kind of fighter, like Johnson that can brawl. And that’s the way you have to fight to beat Tarver. [details]

Anyone thinks he and Tarver are actually friends and he helps him out by fighting with him so Tarver can make some money...? haha

I didnt order the fight since next Sat. I'm ordering Castillo-corrales 2, but it is good to see I got it right for a change! Styles make fights, and I've always said that Tarvers particular style would give jones hell no matter when they fought. Kudos to NO END to Jones for admitting he lost and that Tarver would have been a handful even in his prime at light heavy. I didnt expect that level of modesty from Jones and I am very impressed by it. I truly thought he'd yell 'robbery' if he was outpointed by Tarver. Now I'm even more looking forward to watching the replay.

Tracey, I got it despite maybe missing the live Corrales/Castillo showing and I'll tell you why: I knew form my experience viewing fights that it was unlikely for a beaten guy to come back and win against his conqueror and that Roy isn't quite what he was but I had to watch to see if he'd demonstrate as Larry Merchant said once, those intangibles, heart, courage, guts and risk it all for his honor and pride.

Roy did that ... and he still lost. I had him losing by 3 pts, my buddy had him down by 4. But here were the highlights for me and some low ones.

Roy came out ****y, I think a bit faux bravado as he tried to establish respect in the first couple rounds. He didn't do it as alot of guys do, by knocking hell outa the other guy but by showing his footspeed, disdain for his antagonist and flashing a bit of handspeed.

Of course, there wasn't anywhere near what he had as far as reflexes but there was enough once Tarvr discovered that he was gonna have enough resolve and handled his fear to stand in and punch a bit. He didn't do enough of that, he reacted to Tarver's feints and soft defensive jabs too much ... he couldn't respond in time to capitalize but at one point he did flurry even though forced to the ropes and he landed his hardest shots. Several uppercuts.

Tarver wasn't the same for the rest of the fight. It was like he was waitin on proof that Roy was baitin him or something ... I guess a lifetime of admitting to himself privatedly that Roy was something special was too much todismiss even on the heels of his KO win.

It was funny ... I felt that if he'd consistently waded in he might finish Roy at any time. Anyway, gettin to another part, the funny part ... in the eleventh I believe is when Tarver ****** Roy with that right hook. damn, I could barely see it because the camera didn't have Tarver in it's viewer at the time. It looked like Roy had walked into the side of my tv blindly like walking into a brick wall or something.

I saw a national geographic show about lions and hyenas and this one lioness had moved her cubs and accidently placed them right on top of a very poisoness mamba's nest. That snake bit and killed all the cubs and hurt the mothre lion terribly. The way that lioness staggered and lurched around was what Roy reminded me of ... he was knocked unconsicous and only his instincts and will to win held him together ... and only just.

Tarver was so surprised, I lie to you not ... he jumped up in the air and charged Roy to finish him ... only to fall almost completely outta the ring,LOL. While he was suspended in the air, feet kicking, Roy realized his situation on some level and launched a donkey punch to the back of his head!

I don't know if it landed or not because Roy was retreating and still groggy but it was funny as hell as Tarver still pursued him landing and missing til he was gassed. The round ended with Roy oddly enough on the offensive and Tarver leaning waaaaay outta the ring as if he was about to fall out again.

Well ... Roy did show those intangibles finally. I was horrified as I was when I watched the first tow fights(please ... skip those when you view) when Larry Merchant had the nerve to try to rail on Jones as just goin out there to make it to the limit. BS! Besides, that was a hellla accomplishment having to weather at least TWO punches that were nearly as hard as the one that he lost to Tarver with. Haha, Tarver tore him a new one defending not only Jones but his own accmplishment in victory and that was as it should have been.

Wait til you hear Lampley snobbishly try to diss Tarver's rant at Larry ... of course far from Tarver's earshot.

Kellerman and Costas ... please ... Max isn't the same in this setting as his ole show but his final comments were appropriate as he had to give Roy credit for his performance ... he was amazed that he could hang in for 12 rounds with the lt hvy king as he did and he tipped his hat, unlike that troll, Merchant and his lackey, Lampley. Sauron and Saruman ... bitches.

I had Roy losing by 3, myself but I had the fight even after 8 rounds. Not so much for what Roy did but for what Tarver didn't do. And that was becuse of something he had developed during the fight if he didn't have it before.

He had RESPECT for an old lion who was declining ... as he will do inevitably. So, I was sad. Still am. Bt I am also proud of Roy. He did himself proud by that final stand.

Oh yeah ... that lioness that was hurt so bad? She was nearly paralyzed and blind for a week ... and that pack of hyenas that were her arch rivals though they discovered her laid out on the river bank just went on by after considering attacking her. They'd eaten her cubs but they had too much respect to jump on a lioness they knew to be a formidable enemy from their past. And when she came to, she went back to the scene of the incident to confirm what she thought ... her cubs were dead ... eaten by her enemies after the snake's poison had done it's deed.

Later on ... she was fightin the whole pack of em at one point ... almost by herself as her fellow lionesses had retreated to the trees to escape the overwhelming numbers of hyenas til she too had to escape.

But she got her respect ... her SELF-RESPECT back.

That was before Igwonyayo, "He who greets with fire" arrived( a huge male lion) but that's another story. Great documentary.

I think Roy can live now with this loss ... as he said, "he did his best and that's all any man can do."
