Alright, before i even begin, most on here know me as a big roy jones fan and that i was pulling for roy the whole way. i feel my points really keep things even for both sides. i don't think im too biased in my points here:
on the general fight, Jones vs. Tarver III:
1. first, part of me want's my money back because i didn't pay $50 to see Roy's antics and no 'letting go' of his punches. i understand that some boasting and such is part of Roy as a person, i enjoy it alot of the times, but you can't win rounds in boxing if you don't let your hands go, ESPECIALLY in the last or 2nd to last round. Tarver was OBVIOUSLY fatigued (more on that further down) and if Roy could've stuck it out and not been so lightly hesitant, it would've easily made all the difference in the fight tonight
2. i think someone else should've been in the Jones Jr corner other than just Roy senior. it's a great thing to get encouragement from a father or even tactical advice but Jones senior WASN'T GIVING IT! It's a very traditional scenario for a father to not look at the fight from a spectators point of view, and look at it from a father. He should've told Roy, "Hey, you're not winning this fight", "Throw more punches", "Let your hands go a little bit more as Tarver is hesitant himself", "Use this crowd to your advantage", and finally "Stop all the antics!"; any of these comments could've possibly helped Roy understand where he was at in the fight.
3. this fight was very simply, "Hesitant" vs. "Good and Decent".. by this i mean of course that Roy was, as many people assumed, a bit hesitant to throw combinations, throwing punch for punch, one at a time, Even when it was obvious that those combos were looking good in the judges eyes. Towards the beginning of the fight, when Tarver got Roy in the corner, the crowd went crazy as it looked similar to something from the first fights, BUT when Roy answered those combinations on the ropes with shots of his own, TARVER BACKED UP! I can't believe someone in that corner didn't mention something about that cause after the first few rounds, i never saw any kind of response to punches from Tarver on the ropes again.
Now what i mean about "Good and Decent" when talking about Tarver is that he is simply a good, decent fighter, not a great one. Now, let me give credit where credit is due, Tarver for the most part, fought his fight. He stuck to most of what his corner was telling him and he has one of the best defenses i've seen.
The fact that he could gas-out that easily in a fight where Roy is throwing hardly ANYTHING at him, is why i refuse to call him the best at light-heavyweight. I don't know what it was that caused him to get so tired towards those last 3-4 rounds, but it WASN'T ROY JONES JR. There were many times where i thought the fight could've been over had Tarver continued to throw and instead, he backed out. Tarver COULD NOT have beaten a prime Roy Jones, NEVER. This makes me want to see the Glen Johnson fight from yesterday because if he fought as well as some people are saying he did, i think Glen Johnson could beat Tarver again.
4. I don't want to see Roy fight again. But if he does, will i pay for it? Hell yes, because he's my favorite fighter.
Now, that statement right there defines his career to me. He has so much talent and has had such an amazing career that i refuse to miss one of his fights, no matter who against. Will he ever be at his peak again, most definately NO, but i love him, i i'll watch him fight till the day he dies. I do think he could've given a better effort tonight. But i agree with what one commentator said in that, i think Roy really wanted, more than anything, was to show that he could still stand and brawl with a talent like Antonio Tarver. And this, he DID accomplish. He did not get DOMINATED by any sense of the word. He didn't win, no, Tarver convincingly won, but Tarver never DOMINATED that fight. And no one can say otherwise.
5. I'll admit that those that aren't big Jones fans saved some money here tonight and damn i can't wait for Corrales/Castillo next week.
