A proposed bout between Robert Guerrero and Marcos Maidana is “very close to being signed,” Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Eric Gomez told *********.com late Thursday morning. If and when the bout would be signed, both would meet for Maidana’s interim world title belt at the HP Pavilion in San Jose on August 27th. The bout will be televised on HBO’s “Boxing After Dark.”
“We still need to meet with Maidana’s people, who are coming to Los Angeles for a meeting to finalize the details,” said Gomez. “Both Guerrero and Maidana have verbally said that they want to face each other. It would be a great fight for fans. We just need to finalize the little things.”
Gomez also said that an announcement would hopefully be made in the next week or so.
Both recently fought on April 9th, coming out victorious in action-filled bouts at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Guerrero won a wide 12 round unanimous decision victory over Michael Katsidis. The Argentine Maidana (30-2, 27 KO’s) withstood a late rally by former world champion Erik Morales to pull out a 12 round majority decision.
Guerrero (29-1-1 1NC, 18 KO’s) will be fighting near his hometown of Gilroy, also known for being the garlic capital of the world.
Guerrero was originally scheduled to fight on August 6th, but his proposed bout will now take place three weeks later to give both fighters ample time to prepare.
