    Now a Jones fan.

    A few years ago, when he was pitching shut-outs against everyone who'd give it a try, I despised Roy Jones. I hated his ego, the third person references to himself, and couldn't look past any of it.

    Now, after seeing him a vulnerable human being against Tarver (both fights) and Johnson, I've changed my opinion. I've recently learned about his past with his father and it explains a lot to me about his bravado and his desire to be the very best in the world.

    Roy Jones is actually a very cool, intelligent guy according to all reliable sources. I've never heard "roy is an *******" from anyone who has actually spent a few minutes talking to him.

    Now he's in the mental preparation stage for what will be one of the most important fights of his life. Does it have it anymore? If not, can he still win regardless? Those seem to be the two questions we keep asking ourself. Can Roy Jones, who history tells us has forever lost his trademark quickness, win on guts, heart, and learned skill alone?

    I think so. Or, more realistically, I hope so. Because like the American public who never warmed to Jack Dempsey until he had been dethroned, I am only now appreciating Roy Jones, the most talented fighter of my generation.

    I agree. Like Lampley was saying boxing was easy for Roy Jones, thats why he was so flamboyant. This is a classic case of him being humbled. He is 100% focused, at the press conference (which I didnt see) I doubt he was talking ****, he wants to win this fight so bad.

      Roy finally realized that he's a human being & not something from outer space, KO losses can humble the ****iest fighters, the same thing happened with Vargas, Tito Trinidad, etc...once they've been KO'd, they lose the mystique, arrogance, & ferocity that they once exhibited....

      I do agree, & I'm definitely a bigger Jones fan now that he's trying to bounce-back from adversity, which he pretty-much avoided from 96-03, the only "get-back" was for Griffin, & boy was that impressive get-back! 1st round KO, yeah, I don't think I wanna piss Roy off

        I was always a Jones fan (outside of him beating Toney) and loved watching his brilliance in the ring.

        I, like you, have never heard anyone who has spoken with him call him an ******* or anything of the sort.

          I saw Jones at the MGM Grand on 3 different occasions, and despite looking very busy as though he was on his way somewhere, he stopped and talked to me each time.

          He was very genuine and personable.

          Class act.

            =================================

            Dempsey was a far bigger name and destroyer than Roy could ever think of being. He had plenty of fans too, but was always cast as the bad boy in promotions. He secured the hearts of the rest of the American public with his no excuses warrior ethic in his losses to American Hero Tunney.

            I understand that privately Roy is a heck of a nice guy. His needless posturing and smacktalk is probably the result of coming of age in the rap world. His excessive ego is a product of his competitive nature and talent. Regardless, 95% of the American public has never heard of Roy and could care less about him win, lose or draw. He's just dumb for not retiring though. Dumb.

                    hmm

                    I remember when I met Roy at KFC bout a yr ago. Well, it was before Christmas in 2004. He was a really nice guy. I was so nervous though I was shaking. He probably thought I was a fool, but either way he acted cool and shook my hand and even though he was on the fone with sum1 and carrying about 300 lbs of chicken, he chatted with me.
