A few years ago, when he was pitching shut-outs against everyone who'd give it a try, I despised Roy Jones. I hated his ego, the third person references to himself, and couldn't look past any of it.
Now, after seeing him a vulnerable human being against Tarver (both fights) and Johnson, I've changed my opinion. I've recently learned about his past with his father and it explains a lot to me about his bravado and his desire to be the very best in the world.
Roy Jones is actually a very cool, intelligent guy according to all reliable sources. I've never heard "roy is an *******" from anyone who has actually spent a few minutes talking to him.
Now he's in the mental preparation stage for what will be one of the most important fights of his life. Does it have it anymore? If not, can he still win regardless? Those seem to be the two questions we keep asking ourself. Can Roy Jones, who history tells us has forever lost his trademark quickness, win on guts, heart, and learned skill alone?
I think so. Or, more realistically, I hope so. Because like the American public who never warmed to Jack Dempsey until he had been dethroned, I am only now appreciating Roy Jones, the most talented fighter of my generation.
