1.3 million PPV buys is considered a failure, huh? What would you call this then?
Schaefer calling for four million PPV buys!
Most astute boxing writers think the Shane Mosley-Floyd Mayweather fight will do huge numbers on pay-per-view. Numbers in excess of 1.5 million PPV buys would be deemed a success. According to Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer is dreaming big. He says according to many of their projections, four million is a possibility.
Before you scoff, how many people thought Mayweather's fight against Juan Manuel Marquez would do one million? Now four million is an incredible number, but with the power of Mayweather's "Money" persona, new marketing techniques, increased media exposure and unique promotions like the one with DeWalt tools, boxing is breaking barriers when it comes to getting people fired up about it mega-fights.
For a fight that was universally panned, an 8-1 betting mismatch, against a guy coming off a lopsided loss and a lackluster draw, I'd say 1.3 mil is pretty damn good. If that's the tally for a boycotted garbage fight, just imagine what a popular fight like Pac-JMM would do with the same promotional model (tweaked a bit for more regular time slots for the Fight Camp on CBS, 9AM on the west coast isn't exactly ideal and more commercials wouldn't hurt). 1.5 million buys isn't at all farfetched IMO.
Then again, it's Ben Thompson from Fight Hype with the usual unnamed 'sources' feeding him info, so take that with a grain of salt.
If true, that means Pac and Cotto have tallied about 1.6 million PPV buys this year since the move to SHOWTIME, with Cotto's 250K buys at least doubling the combined buys for all HBO PPVs this year. You think maybe they're regretting turning Cotto-Martirosyan?
Top Rank would be foolish to go back to HBO. Just wish they would use the increased exposure to push other fighters as well. Brandon Rios became a star after he stole the show on the Pacquiao-Margarito 24/7 and Khan has gotten some air time on the program as well.
That is total Ownage right there. Keep it up.
Unless these *****s have a post hating and criticizing this 4 million prediction from before, they got owned.
It's average based on what PPVs are doing now, but I think overall its a success. De La Hoya average around 700-800k buys while Pacquiao is doing upwards of 1mil.
