What's the scouting report on Franklin Lawrence? Boxrec has him rated at the 15th spot and last night he KO'd journeyman Jason Gavern. Before that, he KO'd Jason Estrada, the once prospect from RI.

Lawrence will likely be ranked by the WBC after this.

        from fight news:

Franklin “Yah Yah” Lawrence (15-2-2, 10 KOs) won the WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) heavyweight belt with a seven-round dismantling of tough Jason “The Sensation” Gavern (20-8-4, 9 KOs) in the scheduled twelve round main event last night at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino in Dover, Delaware. In the co-feature, Amir “Hard Core” Mansour (14-0, 11 KOs) won the WBF Inter-Continental heavyweight title, dropping Raymond “King Kong” Ochieng (28-14-3, 18 KOs) four times before stopping him at 1:45 of the opening round of the scheduled ten round bout. The well-attended 7-bout card was promoted by Dover Downs Hotel & Casino.

Franklin Lawrence moved another step closer to a world ranking after scoring his third straight significant knockout win. Lawrence previously stopped former contender Lance Whitaker in seven rounds, followed by a tenth round stoppage of Jason “Big Six” Estrada.

Lawrence is a counter-puncher, but will initiate the action when he has to. He will attack with short, chopping punches that are delivered with surprising power. In Gavern, Lawrence was facing a tough customer who had been stopped only once before.

Gavern went right to the body of Lawrence from the opening bell, landing a series of hard rights to the side. Lawrence timed one and dropped Gavern with a short, sneaky right hand near the end of the round.

Lawrence started strong in round two, landing two overhand rights. He was warned by referee Benjy Esteves for a blow that landed near the back of Gavern’s head. Gavern maintained his body attack, but it was Lawrence who dominated the round.

Round three was close, with Gavern spending much time with his back to the ropes, seemingly by choice. He fought effectively enough off the ropes to make it a close round.

Lawrence regained control in round four, landing a hard left hook-double right hand combination in the opening minute, while Gavern retaliated with two hard rights to the head followed by a pair of rights to the body. Lawrence delivered a nice four-punch combination, a nifty right uppercut-right hand combo and a hard right hand, all to the head. They traded big left hooks as the bell rang. Gavern was warned for hitting low in this round.

Gavern bounced back in the fifth round, taking the round with a big right-left combination and a higher work rate. He was warned again for hitting low, and held a glove up to a suddenly-swelling left eye at one point during the round.

Gavern spent most of round six with his back in a corner, but once again fought effectively from that position. He appeared to take the round by firing first, before Lawrence could take full advantage.

Lawrence turned it up in round seven, landing an assortment of punches before connecting with a left-right to the body followed by a hard right-left-right combination to the head that forced Gavern to take a knee while pawing at his left eye. Gavern rose, but absorbed two big overhand rights from Lawrence before making it to the end of the round.

After some discussion in the corner, and a visit from the ringside physician, the decision was made to stop the bout. It was only the second time Gavern was stopped in thirty-two fights.
