Hello Im gonna get straight to the point, what I saw from Cotto was relatively unimpressive against Torres because of the fact that he was trading with a guy who not only had more power than him, but when Cotto would go in for the left hook to the body, he drops right hand to do so. He also holds his hands up very high, thus leaving himself open for a body shot as well. Cotto while showing he could take a very powerful shot, chose not to keep using his jab and keep the guy off of him. Im very certain that had Torres been in better shape, we would have seen Cotto hit the canvas by possibly the 8th round. Maybe because i like Cotto so much i couldnt understand why he wanted to trade with the guy, when he could just use the jab, outbox him, and set him up for those shots instead. I was dissapointed with his performence, but i know im probably in the minority, i know a Hatton/Mayweather matchup would be brutal for him after what i saw last night. As far as the Peter fight goes, you have to give alot of credit to Steward for preparing Wlad to go those 12 rounds and having him prepared for the Peter assault that was clearly on the way, however, Peters corner was pathetic. The thing is, Wlad holds out his jab when hes not snapping it, which could have easily set Peter up to land a big over hand right, since when he put it out, hes was leaving himself open for such a punch to land big. Also, I felt they needed to stress cutting off the ring. Wlad also stayed to his right alot, but when Wlad would move to his left, it seemed like thats when Peter could get a big opening. Granted Peter did tire out by like round 4, I hope he gets a better corner, and conditions himself better for the next fight. It was a great fight and Wlad did more than enough to propel himself back up top. Much respect to Andre Ward of OAKLAND, BAY AREA!!
Leon's Response: I believe Top Rank should try put Cotto in a big money fight as soon as possible. I was telling everyone who would listen, including the HBO execs, that they need to make Gatti-Cotto at welterweight. I'm not sure how much longer Cotto is going to be able to dodge the bullet, so they might as well try to get him apap...As Paid As Possible. I doubt that Main Events would take that fight though since I understand HBO has already guaranteed Gatti seven figures for his comeback fight. In other words, Gatti's getting paid for a below average opponent as it is, so any Cotto fight would have to wait until HBO is squeezed out of another million or so for a meaningless showcase/comeback fight.
