Upshaw: Players to accept urine, not blood, HGH test

PHOENIX -- NFL players will consent to a urine test for human growth hormone once such a test is developed.

Scientists, however, appear to be closer to developing a blood test for HGH, which stimulates growth and cell reproduction in humans.

"We all know there is no reliable test for HGH," Gene Upshaw, executive director of the NFL Players' Association, said Thursday at the union's Super Bowl news conference. "Until a test is developed for HGH, there's really not an awful lot to talk about. And when that test is developed, we really believe it should be a urine test. No one is interested in a blood test. We got a lot of big tough guys, but they don't even like to be pricked on the finger to give blood."

Commissioner Roger Goodell has said repeatedly since taking office just before the 2006 season that the league would implement a test for HGH as soon as one was found.

From Feb. 2010 when the first ban for an athlete using HGH occurred:
"At this point, there's no reason to believe that blood-testing for NFL players will or should be implemented," George Atallah, union assistant executive director of external affairs, told The New York Post. "We should instead focus on preserving the drug-testing policy that we have in place."

Never going to happen, they'll just wait for the HGH urine test to become commercially available.... which is why WADA paid to develop it in the first place.
The owners have locked the players out, and they want the test. Completely different issue and then there's this...

"U.S. authorities have charged a Canadian doctor with unlawfully treating professional football players with unapproved drugs, including human growth hormone."

"Dr. Anthony Galea, of Toronto, is named in a federal criminal complaint filed Tuesday in Buffalo."

"According to court documents, Galea's clients include at least three National Football League players. One allegedly had two HGH kits delivered to his home while another received actovegin injections.

The players don't want the test because they can't cheat. Any person above board and is clean wouldn't debate the testing. For the record the Players Union is also dissolved

They will, but if they want to receive paychecks this year then they will have to conform to stricter testing.

No, not at all. The players' association has to approve any changes to drug testing measures in collective bargaining. They have maintained for years that they will never approve of blood testing their players, only urine tests for HGH. WADA has funded research for HGH urine tests through Ceres Nanosciences, a test which should be commercially available soon. So once that test is available (which can detect the substance for up to 2 weeks vs 48 hrs, if at all for the blood test), this debate will be moot.

But then again, what does this have to do with boxing? Is there an NFL section here?

What you saying is not whats being discussed now...

"Dr. Gary Wadler, who has worked closely with both the World Anti-Doping Agency and White House Office of Natural Drug Control Policy, lauded the league's decision to make HGH testing mandatory as part of its labor proposal to the NFL Players Association. Wadler also said any protests from athletes about the blood work required to conduct the test "border on the nonsensical."

and in Professional sports it all goes hand in hand...

"In professional boxing, the proposed mega-bout between Manny Pacquaio and Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been derailed over the former's failure to submit to random and strict drug-testing standards beyond what is already required by the sport's sanctioning body in Nevada. Pacquaio's trainer, Freddie Roach, has said his fighter is willing to comply with the request. But Roach also says he will respect Pacquiao's reluctance to have his blood drawn 48 hours before a proposed fight for HGH testing."

The Nevada State Athletic Commission isn't the whole world, and try reading my post before you write some baseless **** because it is the site of the majority high profile fights and is relevant to my thread.

As far a your Pacquiao comment, it's already obvious that he won't take the test because he and Arum don't give a damn about the progression or integrity of the sport. Once some poor bastard gets his skull crushed in the ring by some juicer, then maybe the sport and some of it's ignorant fanboys will wake the FU.
Yea because they have been getting tested so much with OST.... their tests are no different then the Nsac tests for boxers

Its obvious that the only reason you talk about NSAC is because that the only place a Pac-Floyd fight would take....how many of the "big profile fights" have been in NSAC so far?. You're taking another hit on Pac and testing you're not fooling anyone you pansy

You're the only one showing ignorence
