Comments Thread For: Miguel Cotto To Be Ringside To Watch Chavez Jr Up Close

WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto will travel to Los Angeles, California in the coming days to attend the middleweight showdown between WBC champion Sebastion Zbik and mandatory challenger Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., which happens on June 4 at Staples Center. If Chavez Jr. wins, he is the frontrunner opponent to face Cotto in the fall. The Puerto Rican champion was going to fight Antonio Margarito in a rematch, but the Mexican fighter is still recovering from a serious eye injury that was suffered in last year's bout with Manny Pacquiao.

Cotto has been in boxing since 11 years old and had one of the best amateur careers in Puerto Rico boxing history to the point experts compared him to Sugar Ray Leonard. He has fought the best of the best in his pro career so far including HOF and winning titles in 3 different divisions.

JR is going to go from fighting bums to an A level fighter with all the experience Cotto has? There is nothing JR can bring that Cotto can't counter. JR doesn't have great speed, JR is not a big puncher and Cotto faced bigger punchers in his 140 pounds days than JR, his boxing skills are nowhere near Cotto so he can't outbox him. JR has a good chin but that is not enough.

Cotto will KO this dude in less than 7 rounds and become the first Puerto Rican to win titles in 4 different divisions.

          I don't like Chavez Jr.

But he does have some tools that can give Cotto issues.

Length and height= Taller and longer then Margo

          Naturally a much bigger fighter.

          He's young

He has a world class trainer behind him.

He would seem to have a decent chin.

I'm not sold on Jr's power. He dosen't seem to have that much power. Especially at 160.

All that said, I still think Cotto's experience and boxing ability will carry the day.

But it might not be easy.

Cotto vs Chavez Jr is a joke at any weight. why wouldn't Arum let Cotto face the legitimate WBC middleweight champ Sergio Martinez in Feb? Cotto wanted it.

it another example of Arum paying off a sanctioning body to bypass the mandatory, which Martinez is because of his emeritus status.

I hope the WBC strips Chavez Jr for refusing to face Martinez but old Don Sulaiman loves money too much.

too bad Cotto couldn't face a legit champ but instead uncle Bob just sets up these paper title BS fights and we all buy it.

Lenght and height mean nothing if you don't have boxing skills to use them to your advantage. Yuri is a tall dude with boxing skills and Cotto had no problems with that. Actually I think Cotto can target bigger guys better than smaller ones and he can set them up better for his best punch the left hook to the body.

Being young and lack of big fight experience doesn't seem to be an advantage to me.

Yes he does have a very good chin but again so far he has never fought somoene with elite talent. Lets see how his chins hold when he gets hit over 300 times in a fight.

We will get a clear picture in Chavez JR fight with Zibik.
